The Judgement is the killer arriving with Dead by Daylight’s first community chapter on August 25, 2026, and it does not play like anything already in the game. Its main power sends pillars of light across the map, so it can damage you while it is chasing someone else. That single fact breaks the usual habit of relaxing on a generator whenever another survivor is being chased.
Quick answer: Stay out of the killer’s line of sight, listen for the charge and fire sounds to time your dodge, run toward any pillar that is close to you so its delayed damage misses, and bring aura-blocking perks like Distortion, Boon: Shadow Step, or Self-Preservation.
How the Judgement’s Divine Light works
The Divine Light is a column of light the killer aims and then fires in a straight line. While the killer holds the power, an arrow points along the ground and a pillar follows that path, so you can see roughly where it will go before it launches. When the killer presses attack, the pillar spawns and travels forward.
The pillar is not lethal for a short moment after it fires. That delay stops the killer from dropping it directly on top of you for a free hit. Once it turns lethal, it passes through walls and objects and travels a long way, which is how the killer snipes survivors and generators from across the map.
Getting struck applies the Heretic effect. While you carry Heretic, hitting a good skill check on a generator makes it lose progress instead of gaining bonus progress, so repairs slow down. You can strip the effect by interacting with one of the shrines placed around the map.

When you are not being chased, keep an eye out for a pillar heading your way. You can see it approach, and once you learn the general position of the killer during a chase, you can predict where the next pillar is likely to come from. Assume you can be hit at any time and keep repositioning.
During your own chase, rely on sound. There is a steady audio cue while the killer charges the power and a separate one when it fires. Listen for both, because you cannot always turn the camera far enough to watch every angle, especially on a controller. How you react depends on where the pillar spawns.
| Pillar position | What to do |
|---|---|
| Close to you | Run toward it without losing distance from the killer. If you are near the pillar when it activates, the non-lethal delay means it passes without damaging you. |
| Far from you | Spot where the killer is aiming and draw an imaginary straight line from that point to you. That is the path the pillar follows, so step off the line to juke it. |

Treat this killer a lot like the Nurse. Breaking line of sight forces it to guess where to send the pillar, which hands you a much better chance to dodge. Do not commit to a single loop. Keep your distance and rotate around the map so the killer struggles to line up a clean shot.
Watch for add-ons that change the pillar
Some add-ons rewrite how the Divine Light behaves, so pay attention to any unusual pattern. The Chains of the Heretic add-on pulls the pillar back toward the killer whenever it is in its empowered state. Once you notice this, counter it by never standing between the killer and the pillar as it travels.
Surviving the Exile
The Judgement replaces the normal hook with the Exile, which counts as a hook state. Instead of hanging in place, you are sent to a separate map tile and have to play a minigame there. On arrival you receive a Searcher’s Pendant that works like a flashlight.

Shine the pendant at the lost souls, the floating orbs with screaming faces, to bank a stack in the bottom-left corner. Each stack lengthens the Endurance, Haste, and Elusive effects you receive after being rescued, up to a maximum of ten stacks. So the more souls you collect, the safer your unhook window becomes.
While collecting souls, dodge the pillars of light spawning inside the tile. Getting hit costs you hook progress, much like failing a skill check on a hook. If that progress hits zero, you are eliminated with a special animation. Exiling every survivor at once ends the trial immediately, the same as hooking everyone simultaneously.
Rescues happen from outside. When someone is exiled, other survivors see highlighted shrines in the area where the exile occurred and can interact with one to pull everyone out. The rescued survivor reappears near the shrine that was used, marked by a beam of light.
Best perks to counter The Judgement
The killer leans hard on aura reading, and most players will pair it with tools like Gearhead or Lethal Pursuer to pin down your location. Because it never hooks survivors, standard generator regression perks do little against it, which pushes it toward perks that make it kick generators instead. Build around denying aura and punishing those kicks.
| Perk (owner) | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Bound By Obsession (General) | Reveals the killer’s aura whenever it sees yours, so you know the exact moment a pillar is aimed at you. |
| We See You (Eleven) | Lets the whole team see the killer after it reads your aura four times. Paired with Bound By Obsession, it heavily punishes a full aura build. |
| Boon: Shadow Step (Mikaela) | Blocks the killer from reading your aura while you stay inside its radius, a simpler alternative to the aura-reveal perks. |
| Distortion (Jeff) | Gives a similar aura-hiding effect without booning a totem, though it charges up through being chased. |
| Any Means Necessary (Yui) | Resets dropped pallets. The killer usually will not break pallets after a stun, so putting them back makes loops far harder for it. |
| Blast Mine (Jill) | Since the killer is forced into generator-kicking perks, trapping a generator lets you stun and blind it when it goes to kick. |
| Champion Of Light (Alan Wake) | With a flashlight, you can stay close and make it harder for the killer to aim the pillar. |
| Self-Preservation (Yun-Jin) | Hides your aura and scratch marks after the killer downs someone else, making you much harder to find. |

One note on Bound By Obsession. If you owned Laurie Strode before her DLC was removed, this perk shows up in your loadout as Object of Obsession, so look for that name if you cannot find it. Between hiding your aura, staying off the pillar’s line, and stacking souls in the Exile, you can take a lot of the pressure out of this killer even before its player base fully learns it.
