Dress To Impress Chapter 2: Where Is the Gate Key in Tales of the Dark King

The Gate Key sits on a barrel in the house facing the Demetra note gate, and it opens the way to the mansion.

The first job in Chapter 2 of Tales of the Dark King, the Halloween quest in the Roblox game Dress To Impress, is getting out of the village. The quest pads now label this chapter “Chapter 2-1”. A locked gate blocks the way out, and the key for it is in a house a short walk from Atropos, on the way to the gate. If you have not reached the quest yet, our guide to starting Tales of the Dark King shows the way in.

Quick answer: The Gate Key is on a wooden barrel at the end of a stone bench, beside a ladder, inside the tall two-storey house across the street from the “Dearest Demetra” note gate. Press E on “Gate Key / Pick Up”, carry it to the iron barred gate at the end of the village street, and hold E on “Gate / Unlock”. The banner “<your name> opened the gate!” shows, the gate swings open, and the objective changes to “Discover what lies beyond the village.”

Gate Key location: the route from Atropos

We picked the key up on our own three times, in solo runs on 27 and 28 October, and it was on the same barrel every time. In the third run we carried it to the gate and opened it ourselves. It is not in Atropos’s chest, which only holds a letter.

Start next to Atropos, the woman in white by the arched door of her house. Your objective should read “Find your way out of the village.”
Walk left past her on the dirt path that runs beside her house. You pass a stone pillar with a lamp on it, and the walk takes about six seconds.
Stop at the lattice wooden gate set between two lantern pillars. A paper is pinned to it with the prompt “Note / Read”. This is the “Dearest Demetra” letter, and it marks your landmark.

Rotate until you are facing away from the note gate. Across the street, look for a two-storey home with lattice windows, an open arched entrance, and a large clay jar beside it.

Enter through the left half of the front doorway. The door is ajar and, when you face the house, covers the doorway’s right half. Since it is already open, no prompt appears.

If the door in front of you shows “Door / Knock”, you are at the wrong house. That prompt belongs to a closed door near Atropos.

Walk through the brief stone corridor inside, passing two barrels with a lit lantern resting on top and a long bench.

In the room ahead, locate the wooden barrel beside the ladder leading to a ceiling hatch; the barrel is at one end of the stone bench. Approach it until “Gate Key / Pick Up” appears, then press E.

Once you have it, your character holds a large ornate gold key in one hand. In the room, check for a pair of arched interior openings, crates beneath a lattice window, and a clay jug tucked into a corner to make sure you’re in the right spot.

To double-check the house, look back out the front door from inside. It faces straight across the street at the lattice note gate.

Where to use the Gate Key

Leave the house by the front door and go back to the lattice note gate. Follow the dirt street between the houses, past lattice windows, jars, barrels, and flower boxes, until it ends. The village gate is a small lit stone arch with an iron barred gate and a padlock hanging on it, just to the right of a tall house, with stacked dark crates beside it. Its prompt reads “Gate / Unlock”.

If you press E there without the key, the game shows “It’s locked. Maybe I can find a way through somehow…” That message means you still need to grab the key from the barrel.

With the key in your hand, walk up to the padlock until “Gate / Unlock” shows, then hold E. We held it for about two and a half seconds.

The banner “ihuntsnipers opened the gate!” appeared with our own account name.

The banner after we unlocked the gate: "ihuntsnipers opened the gate!" (our own account name).

At the same moment the iron gate swung open, and the key was no longer in our character’s hand. The objective changed from “Find your way out of the village.” to “Discover what lies beyond the village.”

What happens when the village gate opens

In a group, the same banner shows with the name of whoever unlocked the gate, followed by “opened the gate!”. In our group runs another player always got there first, 17 to 45 seconds after the opening scene was skipped.

In our group runs, several things followed in quick succession:

  • The objective changes to “Discover what lies beyond the village.”
  • A second banner names the player who “found the mansion!”
  • The whole group moves to the mansion grounds, a terrace by the water with stepping stones and a bridge.
  • A clock appears at 00:07 AM with “Escape the mansion before 7 AM”.
  • The objective becomes “Discover clues and complete puzzles around the mansion to find a way out.”

Shortly after you arrive, the game shows “The gate closed behind us!” From this point the village is behind you, and the clock is running on the mansion puzzles. The order the mansion banners came in, and how Chapter 2-1 ends with the “Chapter 2_1” badge, are in our Tales of the Dark King Chapter 2 guide.

What is beyond the gate when you play solo

Alone, opening the gate did not move us anywhere. With the objective reading “Discover what lies beyond the village.”, we walked through the open gate ourselves. Past the arch, a dirt path leads into a dark forest.

A little further on there is a shallow stream, and in the distance a long lit building with a terrace, lit windows and urns. We did not walk on to it in this run, so what the game shows when a solo player reaches the mansion is not covered here. In groups, the whole party was moved to the mansion grounds after the “found the mansion!” banner, as described above.

FAQ

Is the Gate Key in Atropos’s chest?

No. Her chest holds a letter. The key is on the barrel in the two-storey house across the street from the lattice gate with the Dearest Demetra note.

Can you get the Gate Key solo?

Yes, and you can open the gate with it alone too. We found the key in three separate solo runs of Chapter 2-1, and in the third we carried it to the gate and unlocked it ourselves.

Does the key disappear after someone takes it?

Not in our run. After we picked it up, the barrel still showed a key and the “Gate Key / Pick Up” prompt while our character held one. Whether every player gets their own key, we can’t say yet.

What happens if you press E on the gate without the key?

The gate stays shut and the game shows “It’s locked. Maybe I can find a way through somehow…”

How do you open the gate with the Gate Key?

Hold E on “Gate / Unlock” at the padlock while the key is in your hand. We held it for about two and a half seconds; the banner “<your name> opened the gate!” showed and the gate swung open.

Do you keep the Gate Key after opening the gate?

No. After the gate opened, the key was no longer in our character’s hand.

Are you moved to the mansion when you open the gate solo?

Not in our solo run. The objective changed to “Discover what lies beyond the village.” and nothing moved us; we walked through the gate into the forest ourselves. In our group runs, the whole group was moved to the mansion grounds after a “found the mansion!” banner.
