Emberville is a 2D pixel-art action RPG built around combat, survival, crafting, and rebuilding a town. Before any of the town-building starts, you play a prologue set inside a magical prison dimension called the Vitromolus, and it works as a compressed tutorial for every system the full game runs on. It ends when you break out and walk into Emberville itself.

Quick answer: Defeat the Spider Matriarch to get the Spider Key, use it on the main gate, fight through the inner prison, free Tinetia from her cell, and follow her to the waypoint portal. The portal drops you in Emberville, where Gumu the trader is waiting.

The Vitromolus: Where the prologue takes place

The Vitromolus is a prison realm, not a normal starting zone. It was constructed by a figure named Mordaxius, whose logs, announcements, and treatises are scattered across the cells and tunnels as readable documents. A second thread of lore points to Duceos, described in The Master’s Journal as the prison’s creator.

The important mechanical detail is Kymia. It is a residual life force energy soaked into the prison, and it resurrects dead inmates. That is the in-fiction reason you cannot permanently die here, and it is why the death you take early on is scripted rather than punishing.

Character creation and the opening room

Character creation comes first and covers gender, hair, facial hair, skin, and clothing. There is no class pick at this stage, which matters later, because your build is decided by what you actually swing rather than by anything you choose here.

You spawn in a wooden room and learn movement, then break a barrel for Softwood. That first pickup opens the inventory menu and sets the pattern for the rest of the run, since barrels, crates, and chests are the main source of both gear and crafting materials.

Weapons and the Mastery system

Every weapon has a primary and a secondary attack, explained on a tutorial pop-up the first time you arm yourself. The prologue hands you one of each major type so you can test them before committing.

Weapon typePrologue exampleRole
KnucklesBroken Rustic Copper KnucklesFirst weapon, close-range melee
SwordBroken Rustic Copper SwordStandard melee, pairs with a shield
StaffBroken Rustic Copper StaffMagic projectiles at range
BowBroken Rustic Short BowRanged physical damage
ShieldOrdinary Rustic Copper ShieldOff-hand defense

Masteries are where progression lives. Each weapon type and each armor type levels up individually as you use it, so swinging a sword raises sword mastery, and wearing heavy armor raises heavy armor mastery. Ranking those up unlocks active combos and passive bonuses. The prologue unlocks Spinning Slash as its demonstration combo, and later you can check the same menu to see bow and heavy armor masteries climbing on their own.

Healing, the hotbar, and the belt upgrade

Health comes back through consumables placed on the hotbar. Carrots and Small Healing Potions both work, which means food is a genuine resource rather than flavor. Keep at least one slot stocked before pushing into a new corridor.

Combat and the hotbar share screen space, with the Carrot slot sitting alongside your attacks.

Hotbar space is not fixed. Equipping a Broken Leather Belt adds slots, and a Broken Small Bag expands what you can carry. Both are ordinary chest loot in the prologue, so grab them early rather than backtracking for them.

Gear quality prefixes on prologue loot

Item names carry a quality word in front of them, and you will see the tier climb as you get deeper into the prison. It is the fastest way to compare two pieces without opening a stat sheet.

Quality prefixExample found in the prologue
BrokenBroken Begger’s Cuirass, Broken Begger’s Leggings
OrdinaryOrdinary Rustic Copper Shield
GoodGood Rustic Copper Sword, Good Rustic Ranger Cap
SuperiorSuperior Rustic Apprentice Coat, Superior Rustic Ranger Leggings
EpicEpic Rustic Adventurer Breastplate

Armor pieces also feed the Mastery system, so a Ranger Cap and Adventurer Greaves are not just stat boosts. Wearing a type consistently is what levels that armor mastery.

Dying to the acolyte of Mordaxius is scripted

Partway through, an acolyte of Mordaxius shows up and kills you instantly. This is the game teaching you the death mechanic, not a fight you were meant to win with copper gear. You revive at a checkpoint and continue, which is Kymia doing exactly what the treatises describe.

Note: the caves between checkpoints are populated with basic insect and bat enemies, and the inner prison adds spike traps and guards. Those are real threats, and they are the fights where your masteries actually tick up.

Gathering, crafting materials, and the level 2 stat point

Mining coal and chopping trees are both available inside the prison, and wood, stone, coal, and copper are the materials the full game uses for crafting and rebuilding the town. Picking them up in the prologue is practice, but it is also stock you carry out with you.

Experience from enemies pushes you to level 2 during the run, which awards stat points to allocate manually. Luck is one of the options on the sheet.

How to escape the Vitromolus and reach Emberville

The exit is gated behind one boss and one key. Everything before it is optional exploration.

Clear the tunnels and find the Spider Matriarch. A Written Warning found earlier flags the fungi-covered spiders, so the fight is signposted well before you reach it.

The objective tracker names the current area, here the Endless Tunnels leading deeper into the prison.
Defeat the giant spider to receive the Spider Key. The Legendary Spider Staff also comes out of this encounter, so check your inventory before moving on.
Take the Spider Key to the main gate and unlock it. This opens the route into the inner prison.
Push through the inner prison. Avoid the spike traps and clear the guards patrolling the corridors.
Free Tinetia, the Bone Lady, from her cell. She becomes your guide out rather than a follower you fight alongside.
Follow Tinetia to the waypoint portal and use it. You know it worked when the loading transition ends in the town of Emberville and Gumu the trader is standing there. The prologue completion screen appears at that point.

Lore documents worth reading on the way out

The written pickups are optional, but a few of them explain systems you will use for the rest of the game.

DocumentWhat it covers
Forgotten LetterThe Crystal Archways
Written WarningThe fungi-covered spiders ahead
Mordaxius’ Log – First SegmentConstruction of the prison and the experiments run inside it
Mordaxius’ Treatise on Kymia – Chapter TwoKymia as a life force energy
Unopened LetterA legendary weapon called Yarabean
Madman’s DiaryA mysterious presence in the prison
The Master’s Journal – First SegmentDuceos, the prison’s creator

Reaching Gumu is the real handoff. The prologue exists to load you with a weapon of each type, a few mastery ranks, and a bag of raw materials before the game switches from escaping a dungeon to rebuilding a town, and it is short enough that a second run with a different weapon focus costs very little time.
