Enshrouded 1.0: How to Cure the Fell Curse

Two Fresh Shroud Spores and one Water make the tonic that clears the curse and blocks it for an hour.

Two Fresh Shroud Spores and one Water make the tonic that clears the curse and blocks it for an hour.

The Fell Curse in Enshrouded is a debuff that cuts your time in the Shroud sharply. Dying does not clear it. You remove it with one consumable, the Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic. You craft it yourself from two Fresh Shroud Spores and one Water, and no workstation or NPC is needed.

Quick answer: Talk to the Alchemist to start A Cure For The Fell Curse. Collect 2 Fresh Shroud Spore at night and 1 Water, then hand-craft the tonic under Supplies – Antidotes and use it from your backpack.

What the Fell Curse does in Enshrouded

Fell enemies are the Shroud-touched monsters with a glowing blue aura. The curse builds up as they hit you and as you kill them. Once it is active, an icon appears in the status area at the top left of the HUD.

  • Your Shroud timer runs out much faster than normal.
  • When the timer hits zero inside the Shroud, it kills you outright instead of draining your health slowly.
  • The curse stays on your character after death.
  • It does not go away over time. Without a cure, it is permanent.

On the Status screen, the Fell Curse appears under Debuffs with this description: “You’ve been cursed by the Fell. Your Time in the Shroud is reduced significantly. This long-term debuff affects you permanently until removed with a cleansing tonic.”

Drinking the tonic clears the curse right away. It also applies Fell Curse Protection, which makes you immune to the curse for the next hour. It does not change the normal Shroud timer, so you still need to watch your clock while you are in the fog.

Unlock the tonic: Talk to the Alchemist first

The recipe stays hidden until you start the quest A Cure For The Fell Curse, so do this before you go out gathering. Once you are cursed, go back to your base and speak with the Alchemist. He recognizes the symptoms and tells you a cure can be brewed from materials found among the Fell at night. The quest then updates to tell you to gather the materials, craft the cure, and use it.

In your Journal, A Cure For The Fell Curse is listed as a side quest, and its objective reads “Talk To The Alchemist”.

Back at your base, talk to Balthazar and choose the conversation topic “Cursed By The Shroud”.

When you speak with him, he looks you over and says, “You’re suffering from a Fell Curse, no doubt.”

Before this talk, the Supplies category of the Crafting menu has no Antidotes entry. Right after it, Supplies – Antidotes appears, with the Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic recipe inside.

You need the Alchemist, Balthazar, living at your base for this to work. If you haven’t rescued him yet, he is sealed in a glowing pod inside the Ancient Vault in the western Springlands. From the Springlands Ancient Spire, head west toward Harvest Homestead. Then follow the paved road into the mountains, deal with the Scavengers at the vault entrance, and clear the vault. Free him from the pod, then place him at your base with the Summoning Staff.

Where to find Fresh Shroud Spore

Fresh Shroud Spore is an Uncommon, level 5 material. It only appears at night, and the crafting menu marks it with “Found at night.” It grows on the surface above the Shroud, not inside it, as glowing blue, tentacled mushroom pods. The pods are usually guarded by a group of Fell enemies. The Springlands are the first place you will find them.

  • Wait for full night before you go looking, because the pods are not there during the day.
  • Fast travel to the Springlands Ancient Spire and walk to its southern ledge. A cluster of spores and Fell guards sits below it.
  • Gliding from a spire is the easiest way to search. The blue glow and the Fell groups stand out from the air.
  • Spawn spots are fixed and respawn, so once you find a patch you can return to it.

Kill the guards, then interact with the pod to harvest it. Spores also turn up in other biomes later on, but the Springlands spot is the most reliable to start with.

If your world or server uses short nights, switch the night length back to normal while you hunt. Otherwise you have much less time to find the pods.

Water is the easy part. You can draw it from a village well, and many players already carry a large stack.

Craft and drink the Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic

Open your character menu and switch to the Crafting tab. This is your own manual crafting menu, so you don’t need a crafting station.

Scroll down the category list on the left to Supplies – Antidotes. Select Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic and check that you have 1 Water and 2 Fresh Shroud Spore.

The Water for the tonic has to be available where you craft it. Away from a base with water, the recipe shows Water in red and you can’t craft the tonic. At a base with water, it shows green.

Craft the tonic. It finishes instantly, and on keyboard the default craft key is Space.
Switch to the Backpack tab and select the tonic. Choose Use Item, which you can reach with a right-click on PC, to drink it.

The crafted tonic can also land on your action bar, and selecting that action-bar slot and using it drinks the tonic as well.

The tonic stacks to 20 and is cheap to make once you know a spore spot. It is worth keeping a few spares, because higher-level areas mean tougher Fell enemies and longer stretches in the Shroud. Both make it more likely that you will be cursed again.

How to confirm the Fell Curse is gone

Check the status icons at the top left of the HUD. The Fell Curse entry disappears and Fell Curse Protection takes its place, with a timer that starts at one hour. You can also see the buff on the Status screen. A Cure For The Fell Curse completes at the same moment, and the Alchemist reacts when you next talk to him: “That cure worked wonders on you, friend! You seem back to your old self.”

Disable the Fell Curse in difficulty settings

You can also stop the curse at the source. The world’s difficulty settings include an option called Modify Shroud Curse. It sits in the Shroud section of the Combat settings and only applies when difficulty is set to Custom. On a dedicated server, stop the server before you change it, then start it again.

HardDouble the Normal chance

Changing this setting leaves the Shroud and its normal timer exactly as they are. It only controls whether Fell enemies can apply the curse and how often.

Fresh Shroud Spore in the Shroud Survival Flask

Spare spores have one other use. The Shroud Survival Flask, crafted at the Alchemist, takes one Fresh Shroud Spore along with materials you will already be farming.
