Enshrouded 1.0: How to Get Goo

Goo takes one Bug Dust, two Shroud Mushroom and one Springlands Dirt at an Alchemist with his Mortar placed nearby.

Goo takes one Bug Dust, two Shroud Mushroom and one Springlands Dirt at an Alchemist with his Mortar placed nearby.

No creature in Enshrouded drops Goo, and you won’t find it lying around the Revelwood. You make it yourself at the Alchemist, and only after you’ve done two things. You have to bring back his Mortar, and you have to turn some bug parts into Bug Dust. Once both are done, Goo is quick to make.

Quick answer: Place the Alchemist’s Mortar in a sheltered base and craft one Bug Dust. Then craft Goo at the Alchemist from 1 Bug Dust, 2 Shroud Mushroom and 1 Springlands Dirt.

Goo recipe in Enshrouded 1.0

Goo is a Common material with an item level of 13. It stacks to 250 per slot. Each craft is instant and gives you one Goo, so you need 15 crafts for 15 Goo.

IngredientAmountWhere it comes from
Bug Dust1Crafted at the Alchemist
Shroud Mushroom2Beneath the Shroud, mostly in the Revelwood
Springlands Dirt1Dig the ground in the Springlands

The Alchemist can craft it, and so can an Alchemist Assistant. Either one needs the Mortar placed within reach. The recipe also only works when you craft under a roof, so your base needs a proper shelter.

What you need before the Goo recipe unlocks

  • The Alchemist, rescued from his Ancient Vault and settled at your base
  • A sheltered home with a bed for him
  • The Mortar, placed within the Alchemist’s reach
  • At least one Bug Dust in your inventory

The order is important. The Mortar unlocks the Bug Dust recipe. Picking up your first Bug Dust then teaches you the Goo recipe. If you skip either step, Goo stays hidden in the Alchemist’s menu.

Crafting menu with the Workbench recipe selected, listing String 3/3 and Wood Logs 12/8 as required resources.
The Crafting menu in Enshrouded shows the Workbench recipe under Essentials, needing String and Wood Logs.

Where to find the Alchemist’s Mortar (Lone Thistle)

The Mortar is the reward from the Alchemist quest “The Alchemist’s Mortar.” Keep working through his quests until this one shows up. It points you to a ruined village in the Shroud.

Travel to Lone Thistle. The village sits in the Shroud, east of the Farmer’s Ancient Vault and north of Mistbury Catacombs.
Go to the Alchemist Tower at the eastern edge of the village and head down to its basement. His laboratory is down there.
Find the hidden mechanism inside the tower to open the laboratory door, which starts out locked. Take the Mortar from the room behind it.
Return to your base and place the Mortar near the Alchemist, inside the shelter. The Mortar counts as an upgrade for his station. It only adds recipes when it sits within his reach.

You’ll know it worked when the Alchemist reacts as soon as the Mortar is placed. He says, “My Mortar, yes! Good work, friend! Let’s see what we can craft with it!” New recipes then show up in his crafting menu.

How to craft Goo, from Critter Parts to the finished paste

Collect Critter Parts. Fell enemies drop them in the Shroud, starting in the Springlands and continuing into the Revelwood. Crabs and Fell Crabs drop 1 to 3 each. Stingers and Venomous Stingers drop 2 to 3.

Talk to the Alchemist, open the Resources tab and craft Bug Dust. Each one costs 1 Critter Parts. Pick up the result, because having Bug Dust is what teaches you the Goo recipe.

Harvest Shroud Mushrooms. They are the large glowing mushrooms you chop down in shrouded areas, and the Revelwood has the most of them. You need two for every Goo.
Dig up Springlands Dirt from ordinary ground anywhere in the Springlands. It stacks to 1,000, so one short dig covers a lot of crafts.

Go back to the Alchemist and select Goo under Resources. Craft it with 1 Bug Dust, 2 Shroud Mushroom and 1 Springlands Dirt.

Goo goes straight into your inventory. Picking it up also teaches the Hunter’s Shroud Arrow I recipe, which is a handy sign that everything is unlocked.

Bug Dust is a 1:1 conversion from Critter Parts. Turn a full batch into Bug Dust before you craft Goo, so you aren’t running back and forth between menus.

Goo for the Flame Altar level 4 upgrade

Taking the Flame Altar from level 3 to level 4 uses more Goo than any other single recipe. It costs 15 Goo, along with the materials below. That means 15 Bug Dust, 30 Shroud Mushroom and 15 Springlands Dirt just for the Goo.

Other recipes that use Goo

After the altar upgrade, Goo turns up in smaller amounts across almost every crafter at your base. The recipes below are grouped by what they make.

Acid Bite also needs 2 Poison Sack, 2 Ammonia Gland and 20 Springlands Dirt. Stun Arrows take 10 Bug Dust, 1 Alchemical Base and 5 Twigs, so they eat through your Critter Parts faster than Goo does.

Five more Flame level 3 armor pieces take Goo, the same as the Healer Tunic and Adventurer Trousers. At the Alchemist, the Mage Hat needs 4 Torn Cloth, 5 Shroud Mushroom, 2 Linen and 1 Goo, and the Mage Gloves need 2 Indigo Plant, 1 Goo, 2 Linen and 2 Shroud Sack. The Blacksmith makes the Tank Gloves from 2 Shroud Sack, 2 Copper Bars, 1 Dried Fur and 1 Goo. At the Hunter, the Ranger Gloves cost 2 Copper Bars, 1 Reptile Leather, 2 Goo and 2 Shroud Sack, and the Cutthroat Trousers cost 2 Linen, 1 Reptile Leather, 4 Bones, 2 Goo and 2 Corrupted Boar Tusk. The rest of these sets are in the early mage build, the early warrior build and the early ranger build.

Talion’s Bow takes 1 Goo in each of its five Hunter recipes, which you get once you have found the bow. The other materials change with your Flame level, starting at 4 Copper Bars, 2 String and 3 Hardwood up to Flame level 3. Eternal Frost Arrow I is the biggest Goo cost at the Hunter: 15 Goo with 20 Brittle Shroud Petals and 15 Bug Dust.

Shroud Arrow I adds 1 Shroud Sack and 5 Twigs. It is a Ranger arrow that deals 16 Shroud damage and releases a Shroud cloud where it lands.

Adventurer Trousers are Rare Warrior legs at item level 10, with 14 Physical Armor and 7 Magical Armor. They unlock at Flame level 3 and also cost 2 Shroud Sack, 1 Copper Bar and 2 Dried Fur.

Build the Medium Magic Chest using 1 Medium Chest plus 1 Shroud Core; it allows crafting from stored items anywhere in your base. A Quick Stack Station requires 1 Shroud Core and 5 Revelwood Stone, while its large variant uses 10 Limestone instead of the stone.

All the lamps also use Glass and Luminous Growth. The Steel Wall Lamp calls for 54 Luminous Growth, so stock up in caves before you build it.

Flammable Goo is an item level 33 material made at the Laboratory. It combines 1 Goo with 5 Tar, 1 Shroud Vapor and 1 Coal, and each craft gives five.

Coloring Station dyes and seedlings

Each Coloring Station color below uses 1 Goo and makes five blocks per craft. A Seedbed recipe uses Goo as well.

  • Antique: Lump of Clay, Revelwood Dirt, Mycelium
  • Blue Goblet: Indigo Plant, Mycelium, Shroud Spores
  • Draped in Envy: Ectoplasm Fragment, Moth, Mycelium
  • Flint: Gloomberry, Revelwood Dirt, Shroud Wood
  • Icy Brook: Bug Dust, Mycelium, Moth
  • Rocky Shore: Indigo Plant, Lump of Clay, Shroud Mushroom
  • Seafoam: Stinging Nettle, Gloomberry, Shroud Spores
  • Azure Russula Seedling (Seedbed): Shroud Mushroom, Azure Russula

Azure Russula grows in Revelwood caves. Don’t eat it raw, because uncooked it gives you Food Poisoning, which lowers your maximum health and stamina.

Since every Goo goes back to a single Critter Part, the real bottleneck is how many bugs you kill in the Shroud. Keep a stack of Critter Parts or Bug Dust in storage. That way, the next recipe that asks for Goo, from Stun Arrows to dyes, only costs you a mushroom run and a few seconds at the Alchemist.
