In Enshrouded, ordinary chests are storage only; to craft with their contents, move the items into your inventory. A Magic Chest skips that transfer: nearby crafting treats its contents as backpack materials, whether you use a Workbench, a crafter such as the Blacksmith, manual recipes, or building materials placed by hand.
Quick answer: Use the Workbench to make a Small Chest, then combine it with 6 Shroud Spores there. Set the Small Magic Chest beside your stations and stock it with crafting materials.
How craft from storage works in Enshrouded
A Magic Chest becomes useful the moment you place it. Opening a crafting menu combines the materials in your backpack with those in all Magic Chests in range, and recipes use that shared supply. Crafting removes the required items from the chest just as it would from your inventory.

These pull from Magic Chests:
- Crafting stations such as the Workbench
- Craftspeople, including the Blacksmith, Carpenter, and Alchemist
- Manual crafting, as long as you’re within range of the chest
- Building blocks and other materials you place yourself
The Forge, Grinding Stones, Seedbeds, and other passive stations cannot take materials from Magic Chests, so you must supply them manually. Ordinary chests—including the Tiny Chest—are never included in crafting, even when nearby.
A Magic Chest has the same capacity as its ordinary counterpart: 24 slots for Small, 32 for Medium, and 40 for Large. Its contents are accessible to crafters; that is the sole difference.

The Small Magic Chest doesn’t need the Carpenter, metal, or Nails. You can build one shortly after you set down your first Flame Altar.

How to check that a station is reading your Magic Chest
Empty your backpack of one material, store it in the Magic Chest, and then open a recipe that uses it. The resource counter on the recipe should show the chest’s quantity even though you’re carrying none. A good test is to put your Metal Scraps in a Magic Chest, walk to the Blacksmith with an empty bag, and craft Nails anyway.

Once the craft finishes, open the Magic Chest again. The Metal Scraps used for the Nails will be gone from the stack.

If the counter doesn’t change, either the chest is a regular one or it’s too far from the station. Craft from storage only works within a limited range.
Medium, Large, Huge, and Enormous Magic Chest recipes
The Carpenter provides every size larger than Small. First rescue him from his vault, then establish him at your base. Apart from the Enormous Magic Chest, each version upgrades the regular chest of its matching size and uses Shroud-based ingredients.

| Magic Chest | Ingredients | Crafted at |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 Small Chest, 6 Shroud Spores | |
| Medium | 1 Medium Chest, 1 Shroud Core, 2 Goo | Carpenter |
| Large | 1 Large Chest, 10 Shroud Particles, 1 Alchemical Base | Carpenter |
| Huge | 1 Huge Chest, 1 Shroud Nexus, 3 Enshrouded Oil | Carpenter |
| Enormous | 24 Wood Planks, 1 Shroud Radiance, 15 Shroud Slime, 2 Gold Bars | Carpenter |
The Enormous Magic Chest skips the base chest entirely and is built straight from planks, gold, and Shroud materials. To reach the stations and resources that produce these ingredients, you’ll need to work through the Carpenter’s quests and the main quest.
Unlocking the base chests
Every standard chest has a separate unlock condition. Craft each one at the Carpenter, and make sure you’re under a roof while doing so.
| Base chest | Recipe unlocks when you pick up | Crafted at |
|---|---|---|
| Circular Sawblades | Carpenter | |
| Tin Ore | Carpenter | |
| Iron Ore | Carpenter |
The Medium Magic Chest also requires the Carpenter quest Table Saw For The Carpenter. The Table Saw it unlocks produces the Wood Planks that the higher-tier chests rely on.

Circular Sawblades are a Rare material made by the Blacksmith under a roof, and they’re the core part of the Table Saw.

The Large Chest becomes available after you pick up Tin Ore.

The Huge Chest unlocks once Iron Ore enters your inventory.

Where to get Magic Chest upgrade materials
The Alchemist supplies most Shroud ingredients, so rescue him and advance his quest line. Other ingredients are obtained from Fell enemies or from Shroud in particular regions.
| Material | Rarity | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rare | Alchemist, or Fell bosses | |
| Uncommon | Fell enemies; Nomad Highlands, Kindlewastes, Albaneve Summits Shroud | |
| Common | Alchemy Station | |
| Epic | An Alchemist, or a Fell Monstrosity armed with a Fell Sicklescythe | |
| Common | Laboratory | |
| Epic | Alchemist | |
| Common | Veilwater Basin Shroud |
Some recipes become available only when you collect a matching item: Shroud Spores unlock Shroud Core, Shroud Particles unlock Shroud Nexus, Coal Powder unlocks Enshrouded Oil, and a Shroud Relic unlocks Shroud Radiance. Remember to craft the Alchemist recipes under a roof as well.
Shroud Particles hold a denser concentration of Shroud than spores, and the Large Magic Chest needs 10 of them.

Alchemical Base is the other half of the Large Magic Chest recipe and is made at the Alchemy Station.

Enshrouded Oil comes from the Laboratory, and the Huge Magic Chest takes 3 of it.

Shroud Radiance carries more Shroud energy than Shroud Nexus. You’ll need one for the Enormous Magic Chest.

Magic Chest placement and what to store in them
Magic Chests have limited reach, so position each one near the stations that need its contents. For most bases, one group of chests is enough. If your build spans a castle or village, place separate Magic Chest depots on opposite ends of your territory.
At the start of the game, pile a few Small Magic Chests together and reserve them for crafting materials. Food and gear can’t be crafted from storage, so putting them in these chests wastes space.
Quick Stack Stations for filling Magic Chests
When crafting materials are drawn from storage, your only job is to keep the chests stocked. The Quick Stack Station moves items out of your backpack and into nearby Magic Chests that already hold a stack of the same item. The Carpenter builds both versions, and either one must be crafted beneath a roof.
| Station | Magic Chest radius | Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| 16 m | Flame level 3; Logistics Management quest | |
| 24 m | Flame level 4 |
The standard station only reaches Magic Chests within 16 m, so put it in the middle of your chest cluster.

The Large Quick Stack Station extends that reach to 24 m, which suits bigger storage rooms.

These two systems handle storage from start to finish. Use Quick Stack once to send your haul to the appropriate Magic Chests; then any crafter in range can use their contents without another transfer.
