In Fake an Egg, not every egg sitting in the yard is an egg. Other players can disguise themselves as one and wait for someone to walk up, so buying blind is a gamble. A scanner removes that gamble. It tells you whether an egg is real before you pay for it, and it works on any egg up to the rarity of the scanner you own.
Quick answer: Buy a scanner at the SCANNERS stall, equip it from hotbar slot 2, walk up to an egg, and press E at the [E] Scan prompt. Green “REAL” text above the egg means it’s safe to buy.
Where to buy a scanner in Fake an Egg
Scanners come from a purple booth labelled SCANNERS, which sits right next to the Weather Machine in the main yard. Walk up to it to open the Scanners menu, where every tier is listed with a short description and its current stock.
Stock is limited and resets on a timer. The countdown sits at the top of the menu as “Refreshes in” followed by the time left. When a scanner’s stock hits x0, it shows as “Sold Out” until the next refresh, so if the tier you want is gone, wait out the timer and check back.

Each scanner checks eggs of its own rarity and everything below it. A Rare Scanner, for example, can verify Common, Uncommon, and Rare eggs, but not an Epic one. Higher tiers are locked behind your Rebirth level.
| Scanner | Checks eggs up to | Rebirth needed | Example egg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common Scanner | Common | None listed | Dog Egg |
| Uncommon Scanner | Uncommon | None listed | Parrot Egg |
| Rare Scanner | Rare | Rebirth 3 | Hyena Egg |
| Epic Scanner | Epic | Rebirth 5 | Mammoth Egg |
| Legendary Scanner | Legendary | Rebirth 8 | Swordfish Egg |
| Mythic Scanner | Mythic | Rebirth 12 | Wyvern Egg |
| Secret Scanner | Secret | Rebirth 16 | — |
| Exotic Scanner | Exotic | Rebirth 20 | — |
| Divine Scanner | Divine | Rebirth 24 | — |
The rarity of an egg is printed in the tag floating above it, along with its name and price. Match that rarity against your scanner before you try to scan. Pricier eggs sit higher up the ladder: a Common Dog Egg costs $96, while a Mythic Wyvern Egg runs $110.0M, which is exactly where a fake would hurt most.
How to scan an egg

E at the [E] DROP prompt to place it inside so it can hatch. How to confirm the scan worked
You’ll know the scan went through when the verdict text appears over the egg instead of just its name and price tag. “REAL” in green is the green light to buy. After you drop the egg in your pen, it sits there until it’s ready, at which point a Hatch option appears and the egg turns into the animal it names, earning cash per second from then on.
Hatching runs at double speed at night, shown on the HUD as “NIGHT Hatch Speed x2”, so verified eggs dropped into your pen after dark finish faster.
