Fatekeeper: How to Find the Portal Room and Activate the Altar

Skip the wasted exploration in Haven and reach the portal altar within a minute of arriving.

Skip the wasted exploration in Haven and reach the portal altar within a minute of arriving.

One of the first objectives in Fatekeeper sends you to find the Portal Room, but the game gives almost no direction once you arrive in Haven. The room is not tucked away in a side building or behind a hidden quest. It sits below the main level of the settlement, reached by following the stairs down rather than searching the streets.

Quick answer: In Haven, enter the main building ahead of you, find the staircase inside, and keep descending, taking the stairs that branch to the right. At the bottom, you reach an altar. Inspect it, press the runes, then step through the portal to complete the objective.

Reach Haven first

The opening path is mostly linear and built to push you toward Haven. You do not need to fight anything important or solve a puzzle to get there. Just keep moving forward through the cave and up the trail until the settlement appears.

You can gather crafting materials along the way, including Blue Dogbane, Northern Firecap mushrooms, and Rockflower. None of these are required to find the Portal Room, but they become useful later for alchemy, so grab them if they are close.

Find the Portal Room in Haven

Haven looks like a hub packed with secrets, and that is exactly where most players waste time. For this objective, ignore the side buildings and head for the main structure. The route underground is short once you know it.

Walk to the large building directly ahead in Haven. The house at the bottom is the blacksmith’s. Go through the first doorway and enter.
Inside, you can pick up a Dagger and a Full Helmet from the table beneath the anvil where the blacksmith works, along with some metal fragments. These are optional, so skip them if you only want to progress.
Head deeper into the building until you reach the staircase. Take the stairs down on the right and keep following the path as it leads further below the main floor.
Continue descending until you arrive at the altar at the end of the corridor. This is the Portal Room.

Note: The hardest part is realizing the objective sits underground. Once you commit to going down the stairs and staying on the lower path, the room is only seconds from Haven’s entrance.

Interact with the altar and step through the portal

Approach the altar and inspect it when prompted. Kor Guran, the rat who guides you from the start, tells you to press the runes. After the runes are set, step through the portal. You are then taken into a pocket realm, which begins the tutorial.

You know the objective worked when the portal activates, and you transition into the pocket realm. From there, you play through the back-to-form tutorial and clear waves of enemies using melee and magic. Completing those waves grants a level before you return.

Activate the portal back to the lodge

When the tutorial ends, return to the lodge by using the portal again. Use telekinesis on the sigil to trigger it. This sends you back so you can continue with the next stage.

Back at the lodge, the map table sits in the middle of the room and lets you travel to the Ancient Haulways. Before heading up, you can open the skill tree to spend points across Health, Melee, Spells, and Alchemy. You can also save at the campfire at the end of the room.

Optional: Visit the Alchemy Lab before you leave

If you want to handle the optional objective, take the stairs down on the right side of the lodge. At the end of the path is the Alchemy Lab.

There you can pick up the recipes for Explosive Grenade and Rotvein powder from the table, then interact with the alchemy pot on the right. Collect ingredients from the table beside the pot and combine them to brew different potions. This is also why the mushrooms and herbs gathered earlier are worth keeping.

You will return to this lower section of Haven several times during your playthrough, so learning the descent now makes every future trip to the Portal Room faster. Once the altar is active and you are travelling from the map table, you are free to circle back and explore the rest of the settlement at your own pace.
