Where to find Wu Xuan

The battle is set in Pangzhen’s backstreet. For its location, consult the Pangzhen interactive map. The Zhang’s Hideout (Pangzhen) bell is nearest; the Backstreet Archway bell is next closest.

Recover at Zhang’s Hideout (Pangzhen) bell, positioned about 99 m from the arena; return here after every attempt.
Follow the backstreet away from the bell. Along the way you drop down a few metres once.
Climb the stone stairs at the end of the street into the lantern courtyard. Wu Xuan stands inside, surrounded by big drums on stands and wooden houses.

Walk into the courtyard to start the fight. His name bar appears at that point, and he shouts battle cries about slaughtering you and crushing his foes into dust.

Stay clear of the courtyard’s rear edge: crossing it sends Soul roughly 2 m down into a narrow lane enclosed by walls. The stone stairs next to the lane cannot be climbed. To get back, pass through the opening at the lane’s far end into the yard beyond, then head back up into the courtyard.

Wu Xuan’s mace attacks

The game doesn’t display attack names, so each attack below is described by how it looks. The flash colour tells you how to respond. A blue flash means you can parry the hit. A red flash means it can’t be parried, so you need to dodge it.

Wide mace sweep

He often starts with a wide, level swing of the spiked head at chest height. It sweeps across a large area in front of him, so dodge through the attack or move beyond its range.

Long combo with a red-flash finisher

He strings together several powerful swings, with a red flash appearing just before the final strike. Block or parry the opening attacks; once the flash shows, evade the finishing blow rather than attempting a parry.

Ground slam

He drives the mace into the paving, and shattered stone sprays out around the impact. The spray reaches past the mace head, so move well away from where it lands.

Rising swing

He heaves the mace from low to high and throws up dust and rubble. Sidestep this one. Backing straight away from him works less well.

Grab

He lunges with a red flash. If the lunge connects, he seizes Soul and keeps dealing damage for several seconds. Dodge the moment the red flash shows. Once you’re caught, the hold keeps hurting you until it ends.

Wu Xuan’s Blight surge at about 70% health

At about 70% health, Wu Xuan shouts that the fallen’s souls return to the Blight. Purple fire spreads over the arena floor as his armour and mace take on a purple glow. For the remainder of the fight, purple trails follow his swings. His health remains on the same bar.

Ground eruption

Purple energy bursts out of the ground around Soul. Keep moving and stay off the glowing patches.

Purple sweep

His wide sweep now trails a long ribbon of purple energy that reaches further than the plain version. Give it more room than before.

Purple wave

A towering wall of purple energy rolls across the arena. Dodge sideways out of its path rather than backing away from it.

Lunging thrust

He drives the mace head forward in a long, straight lunge with a purple streak behind it. Sidestep; it covers a lot of ground.

The purple sweep reaches further than the plain version, so spacing that worked earlier in the fight can now get you hit. Keep clear of the purple floor patches and stand a little further back than you did before the surge.

How hard Wu Xuan hits on Pathbreaker and Wayfarer

These figures use Soul’s maximum HP of 1,402 and 3 healing gourds as their baseline. Pathbreaker is the standard difficulty; Wayfarer is the easier option.

DifficultyHitDamage to Soul
PathbreakerSingle mace hitAbout 115 to 140 HP
PathbreakerRed-flash combo finisherAbout 285 HP
PathbreakerFast three-hit stringAbout 570 HP
WayfarerSingle mace hitAbout 80 to 100 HP
WayfarerGrab (over the full hold)About 300 HP

On Pathbreaker, one fast string of three hits takes about 570 HP in under two seconds. Watch especially for the grab and the combo’s final blow. If his damage is proving too high, Wayfarer reduces enemy damage, but Wu Xuan still has 76,300 HP.

Tips for fighting Wu Xuan

  • Before entering the courtyard, rest at the Pangzhen bell in Zhang’s Hideout.
  • On a red flash, dodge. On a blue flash, parry.
  • Heal right after he finishes a long string, not while he’s mid-combo.
  • After the Blight surge, avoid the purple patches on the floor and keep farther from the reach of his swings.
  • Stay away from the courtyard’s back edge so you don’t drop into the lane below.

Wu Xuan reward: Wolfjaw Phantom Edge
