Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave — How to Change Classes and Pass Certification Exams

Reclassing units in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave runs through a certification exam system based in Dagsion. Your Flame Lord earns a free first class change during an unavoidable Part 1 tutorial, and from there you buy licences and pass exams to add new classes permanently to a unit.

Quick answer: Buy the licence for the class rank you want from the licence vendor in Dagsion’s Temple district, then speak to the certification NPC, pick your unit, select the class, and spend the licence to attempt the exam. Once a class is unlocked, switching into it is free.

Where certification happens in Dagsion

Climb the steps in the centre of Dagsion’s Temple district to reach the two NPCs who run the whole system. This certification hub is separate from the individual god and goddess Temples you rebuild later.

  • The licence vendor sells the items you need for standard exams.
  • The certification NPC administers the exams and lets you reclass.

Both are introduced early in every route through a mandatory story beat, so no path can lock you out of class changing. If you want to swap between classes a unit already holds, pick the Reclass option under the exam instead of running another certification.

How to certify a unit for a new class

Visit the licence vendor in the Temple district and buy the licence tied to the class rank you are targeting. Each rank uses its own licence type.
Talk to the certification NPC and choose the Certification Exam option, then select the unit who will take the test.
Choose the applicable exam tier, then select a class. Its preview covers stat-growth changes, usable skills, skill-experience bonuses, and the ranks counted by the exam.
Review the pass chance, the Ideal Lv, and the required skills before committing. Spend the licence to attempt the exam.
On a pass, the right-hand stat screen updates to reflect the new class, confirming the certification worked. From then on you can change into that class whenever it suits your build.

A failed exam does not lock you out. You keep the unit and can retry the same class later once you have raised the pass chance.

How pass chance is calculated

The displayed pass chance runs from 0 percent to 100 percent and is set by the unit’s current skill ranks. You do not need every recommended skill maxed to attempt a standard exam, but training the class’s primary and secondary skills pushes the percentage up. The exam screen colour-codes each rank so you can see exactly where a unit falls short.

Level is one of the most impactful factors. The Ideal Lv for each tier signals when a class is meant to become practical, and attempting an exam while a unit trails that level makes passing a real uphill fight.

Every class rank and how it unlocks

There are five ranks: Beginner, Specialty, Advanced, Master and Divine. Each has its own unlock conditions on top of the licence and level requirements.

Beginner classes

The class-change tutorial introduces these early in Part 1 of every path. They use Beginner Licences, with level 5 as the ideal. Since reclassing costs nothing, you can test an initial direction without permanently committing a unit.

Specialty classes

As Renown rises during Part 1, Specialty classes become available. These classes call for Specialty Licences and list level 20 as their ideal level. Units start moving into defined roles at this point, including mounted, armoured, physical, and magical fighters. While they are in this phase, prepare them for the Advanced class you intend to use.

Advanced classes

Advanced classes also come from higher Renown and generally use Advanced Licences at an ideal level of 35. Several are not Renown alone, though. Some require quests tied to a Flame Lord’s unique path actions, such as Cai unlocking classes through Mentorship or Leda earning Dancer through her performance quests. Once a class is unlocked on one path, it stays unlocked across all playthroughs.

Master classes

Part 3 adds Master classes, the highest tier in the normal class structure. They require Master Licences and give level 45 as the ideal level. Because their skill checks are demanding, reaching the listed level by itself will not ensure a strong pass chance. Many of these classes additionally call for rebuilding particular gods’ and goddesses’ Temples and finishing the related quests.

Divine classes

Divine classes are special Part 3 classes that skip the licence and ideal-level format. Around the middle of Part 3, you are prompted to find particular Keys hidden in specific dungeons and bring them to a hidden Temple. Each Divine class uses its own unique certification item rather than a shared licence.

A Divine class exam differs from an ordinary one: the unit must reach a 100 percent pass chance before you can attempt it.

Exclusive and restricted classes

Divine classes and Dancer are exclusive, meaning only one character can hold each at a time. That assignment is not permanent. Choose Return Classification at the certification NPC to relinquish an exclusive class so another eligible unit can take its exam.

That means Leda can leave Dancer behind: her performance quests unlock the class and steer her toward it, but do not make it permanent. You can reclass and give the role to any favourite who reaches a 100 percent pass chance. Divine classes offer the same flexibility; their stat and skill demands may favour particular units without forcing you to use them.

Most classes can be used by any unit that satisfies the requirements, though a small number have exceptions:

  • Only female units can become Wing Soldier or Celestial Trooper.
  • Dancer and every Divine class can have only one active holder at a time.
  • A unit’s model may rule out classes it cannot physically support; for example, Goliath cannot mount a horse or an ornius because of its size.

Keep this distinction in mind when planning builds. Certification is the first successful exam for a class and consumes a licence. Reclassing places a unit in a class it has already unlocked; it is free and can be done whenever you wish.
