Microsoft Teams is one of the most advanced platforms of its kind. It offers several options and has a simple interface, which makes it even more appealing to users. But every app/software is prone to issues, and Microsoft Teams is no exception.
Many users have reported a black (in some cases white) screen issue with Microsoft Teams. When they open the Teams app, it shows a black screen, and they can’t work on it. The problem has been reported only for the app and not the web and mobile version of it. We can expect the issue to be fixed in the coming updates.
In this article, we will see how to fix the black screen issue on Microsoft Teams app.
Fixing Microsoft Teams Black Screen Error
If you are unable to open Microsoft Teams at all, try the fixes given below to resolve.
Reboot the Computer
Some of the app-related issues are fixed simply by rebooting the computer. To reboot the system, right-click on the start menu, select ‘Shut down or sign out’, and then click on ‘Restart’.
In case you rely on keyboard shortcuts, use the ALT + f4
shortcut to restart the system.
Using Task Manager
A Task Manager allows us to monitor and control the various programs and processes running on the computer. It can also be used to terminate programs and processes.
Right-click on the Taskbar and select ‘Task Manager’ from the menu.
In the Task Manager, select ‘Microsoft Teams’ under Apps and click on ‘End Task’ at the bottom.
Now, open the Microsoft Teams app, and the black screen issue should be resolved.
The methods we have discussed till now are all workarounds and not permanent solutions. Try the two methods given below to permanently fix the issue.
Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
Program compatibility identifies the problems with the app and fixes them automatically.
To run it, right-click on the Microsoft Teams desktop icon and select ‘Troubleshoot compatibility’ from the context menu.
The troubleshooter will run. Select the first option, ‘Try recommended settings’.
Click on ‘Test the program’ to see if the new settings fixed the issue. A window will open when you click on ‘Test the program’, which automatically closes in a couple of seconds. When the window closes, click on ‘Next’ at the bottom.
If the issue is fixed, click on ‘Yes, save these settings for this program’. In case it isn’t fixed yet, select the second option and follow the steps.
Disable Hardware Acceleration
If you are now able to properly open the Microsoft Teams app, disable the hardware acceleration to permanently resolve the black screen issue. Many users have reported that disabling hardware acceleration is effective in fixing the problem.
In the Microsoft Teams app, click on your picture(or initials) at the top-right corner and select ‘Settings’ from the menu.
Now, untick the check box right behind ‘Disable GPU hardware acceleration’ to disable it.
Now close the Microsoft Teams app using the Task Manager as discussed earlier in the article.
The methods given above will help you fix the black screen issue with Microsoft Teams. Moreover, if you understand the process, you can resolve similar problems with other apps as well.
