Gemini’s latest update introduces a major shift in how Google’s AI assistant responds to your queries. By connecting directly to your Search history, Gemini can now deliver answers that reflect your interests, habits, and previous searches. This upgrade means you’ll receive more relevant recommendations, faster answers, and a smoother experience when interacting with Gemini—whether you’re brainstorming a trip, seeking content ideas, or picking up a new hobby.

Setting Up Search History Personalization in Gemini

Open gemini.google.com or launch the Gemini mobile app. Make sure you’re signed in with a personal Google Account, as this feature isn’t available for work, school, or users under 18, and is currently excluded in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.

At the top of the interface, select Gemini or Gemini Advanced. Then, choose Personalization (experimental) from the model drop-down menu.

If this is your first time enabling personalization, you’ll see a prompt to Connect now—click this to link your Search history.

Confirm that your Web & App Activity setting is turned on. This is necessary for Gemini to reference your Search history.

Enter your question or prompt in the chat box and submit it. Gemini will automatically check if your Search history can improve its response. For example, if you ask for vacation ideas, Gemini may use your recent travel-related searches to suggest destinations that match your interests.

Gemini only references your Search history when its advanced reasoning model determines it will actually improve the answer. Each time your Search history is used, you’ll see a clear banner indicating the data source, along with an option to disconnect at any time.

Searching Past Gemini Chats with Keywords

Gemini’s new “Search for chats” feature makes it much easier to revisit previous conversations. Instead of scrolling through a long list of old chats, you can now search by keyword or topic and jump straight to the relevant exchange.

On the Gemini web app, open the side panel by clicking the menu icon in the top left corner. Look for the magnifying glass icon, which opens the “Search History” page.

Type your keyword or topic into the search bar. Gemini will display a list of results, highlighting every instance where your keyword appears in past chats. Controlling and Disconnecting Your Search History

Google has designed Gemini’s personalization with strong privacy and transparency measures. You’re always in control of your data, and Gemini will never use your Search history without explicit permission.

To disconnect your Search history, revisit the Personalization (experimental) section in the Gemini interface. Above the chat box, select Disconnect your Search history and confirm your choice.

Disconnecting stops Gemini from referencing your Search history in future responses, but it does not delete your Search history or past Gemini chats. To remove past activity, you’ll need to manage or delete it through your Google account’s activity controls.

Whenever personalization is active, Gemini displays a visible notice and provides a link to review or disconnect your Search history. You can also review which data sources—such as saved info, past chats, or Search history—were used to generate each answer.
