Version 7.1, “A Requiem for the Underworld,” goes live on September 23 alongside the sixth anniversary celebration. Its headline freebie breaks new ground in Genshin Impact: in addition to the normal standard 5-star selection, each account may take one limited 5-star character at no cost from a set of six, without spending Wishes.
Quick answer: After the September 23 update, complete the Version 7.1 Archon Quest. Then use the Events menu to select one limited 5-star from six choices; that selection cannot be changed.
The two free 5-star selectors in Version 7.1
Two separate selectors run during the version, and they do not compete with each other. One draws from limited, event-exclusive characters; the other is the familiar anniversary pick from the permanent Wanderlust Invocation roster. Neither involves a banner, a random roll, or a purchase — you open a menu and choose.

The six names cover a wide spread of jobs, from Hydro damage dealers to a Dendro healer, so the sensible approach is to treat the list as a shortlist of roles your roster is missing rather than a popularity contest.
If you already own one of the six, selecting them spends the reward on a duplicate rather than a Constellation you can plan around.

Yumemizuki Mizuki is the newest name in that pool, which is why veteran accounts holding most of the older standard characters tend to land on her. Newer accounts are usually better off taking a carry or a healer they simply do not have yet. As with the limited pick, confirming the choice is final.
How to unlock the limited 5-star selector
The reward is gated behind story progress, not a login streak, an Adventure Rank wall, or a top-up. Everything below happens after the version goes live.
There is no way to swap the character later, so decide before you hit confirm.
Version 7.1 pull count: 91 free-to-play, 123 with Battle Pass
Across the full version, a free-to-play account earns 11,065 Primogems and 22 Intertwined Fates. At 160 Primogems per wish, that converts to about 91 pulls on Character Event Wishes. A further 15 Acquaint Fates come in on top, but those only work on the Standard Wish.

Welkin Moon adds 90 Primogems on every claimed day, or 3,780 across the version. The paid Battle Pass contributes another 680 Primogems and four Intertwined Fates, though only if you level it far enough to reach those tiers.
Worth keeping in perspective: 91 pulls covers one hard pity from zero, but it guarantees nothing about which 5-star you get. Lose the 50/50 and the worst case stretches to 180 wishes, or 28,800 Primogems. That income also trickles in through daily commissions, events, and endgame resets over six weeks, so only a slice of it exists on the first day of Phase 1.
Anniversary rewards: 1,600 Primogems and 10 Intertwined Fates
The anniversary package splits across two delivery channels. A chunk lands in your in-game mail, and the rest pays out through the “Rainbow’s End: Resplendent Starlight” login event. Combined, it is worth 20 Event Wishes before you touch any other Primogem source in the version. The sixth anniversary itself falls on September 28, a few days into the patch.

Inbox rewards remain available for 30 days and then expire, whereas the login rewards require an actual sign-in on each day. Missing a day leaves that reward slot unclaimed. With the version change, the Initial Top-Up Bonus resets, bringing back the doubled Genesis Crystal amount for every pack tier.
Silver Light: the free 4-star sword from the Moonchase Festival
The Moonchase Festival returns at Yilong Wharf in Liyue as the version’s flagship event, and finishing it hands over a free 4-star sword called Silver Light. At level 90 it sits at 510 base ATK with a 41.3 percent ATK substat, and its passive is built around Elemental Mastery. A second event, “Tabletop Troupe: A Gathering on Adventure’s Eve,” runs alongside it, and both feed into the Primogem totals above.
Version 7.1 livestream codes are no longer redeemable
Three Special Program codes — Rekviem, Vesna0923 and PrimaDonna — were worth 300 Primogems combined and stopped working on September 15. Anyone who redeemed them in time received the Primogems through in-game mail rather than directly in their wallet, which is the normal behavior for livestream codes. Future code drops go through the same place.
Your account must be Adventure Rank 10 or above to redeem the rewards. Should the in-game redemption box refuse a string, enter it on the web page instead.
September 23 is the key date. Finish the Archon Quest as soon as possible to secure the limited 5-star, then use the Events menu for the standard selection, and continue signing in during the anniversary track so all 10 Intertwined Fates are claimed. The remaining rewards — the 91-plus pulls, Silver Light, and Crystal tier reset — arrive automatically over the next six weeks.
