The iPhone XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR now fully support Dual SIM functionality, thanks to the iOS 12.1 update which started rolling out on October 30th. To add an eSIM to your iPhone you need to get a QR code from your wireless carrier which you can scan by going to Settings » Cellular » Add Cellular Plan.

As of now, a few of the carriers are providing QR codes for eSIM. In the USA, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have clearly stated that they will be adding support for eSIM at some point later this year.

For the rest of the world, eSIM support is very limited. Only 11 countries currently support eSIM and a mere 16 wireless networks world over.

Below is a list of countries and carriers which are going to support eSIM, and the release timeline for the rollout of eSIM from these networks.

When will eSIM release in USA

Verizon eSIM release date

The carrier has the eSIM stuff ready for the iPhone but it’s facing a major issue. If the Verizon service is set as a secondary number on the iPhone, the data speeds get limited to 2G speeds. Verizon is working with Apple to resolve this issue. But until the issue is fixed, the carrier won’t activate Verizon service on any eSIM. Check out the full statement released by Verizon to The Verge.

Wireless customers will be able to activate Verizon service eSIMs as soon as we’re confident you’ll be able to have the great, high-quality service you expect from us on both your primary and secondary line. If you are a Verizon customer and you activate another carrier’s service on your iPhone’s eSIM, your Verizon service will be degraded due to the current software configuration. Based on our discussions with Apple, we believe these concerns will be resolved quickly and you should be able to add our great Verizon service on your secondary line before the end of the year.

Until the secondary line can deliver Verizon’s full suite of voice and high-speed data services, we won’t activate Verizon service on any eSIM. This includes our own customers’ iPhones with dual SIM capabilities as well as iPhones on competitors’ networks.

AT&T eSIM release date

AT&T has stated that it won’t be supporting Dual SIM on Apple devices via eSIM at this time. The carrier is concerned about the security issues of letting users convert physical SIM cards into an eSIM. Below is the full statement by AT&T on eSIM.

AT&T will not be supporting DSDS on Apple devices at this time. The eSIM….should remain secured and should not be sold to customers at this time.

Notably, some users were able to convert their AT&T SIM cards into an eSIM earlier today. However, the carrier is now deactivating all eSIMs that were activated by mistake.

T-Mobile eSIM release date

T-Mobile is also holding the horses on the rollout of eSIM QR codes for converting physical T-Mobile SIM cards into eSIM. The company said it’s working on creating the best experience possible and will have a solution before the end of 2018.

Sprint eSIM release date

Sprint hasn’t shared any promising plans to introduce the eSIM service yet. The carrier is not even mentioned on Apple’s support page where all countries and carriers currently supporting the eSIM standard are listed. But the carrier will definitely support eSIM in the future, maybe not this year but early in 2019 for sure.

How to get Airtel eSIM QR code in India

Airtel came out to be the first carrier to support eSIM in India. Only hours after Apple rolled out the iOS 12.1 update, Airtel started accepting requests from Postpaid users in the country. Unfortunately, the carrier put a halt on the activation of eSIM later in the day with the following statement: “The official launch date for eSIM facility in India is yet to be confirmed by Apple. We will share more details once it is launched.”

If you wish to give it a try, send an SMS to 121 from your Airtel Postpaid number with the following text “eSIM <your registered email ID>”, then follow the instructions from Airtel.
