The Story is one of the few crafts in Graveyard Keeper 2 that charges you in something other than materials. It sits on the Writing Desk alongside the usual paper recipes, but the craft will not start if your Insanity bar is empty, because writing burns Insanity instead of granting it.

Quick answer: Unlock Books I under Theology, build a Writing Desk, bring 1 Faith, 1 Clean Paper, and 1 Ink, and stock up Insanity first — the craft drains 1 Insanity per tick.

Story recipe requirements

The Story card lists everything the craft consumes, including the Insanity drain that trips up most players the first time they open the desk.

Clean Paper is made at either the Writing Desk or the Paper Press, so you can produce it on the same bench you write on. It can also be broken down on the Study Table for 1 Research, which is worth keeping in mind before you feed your whole stack into Stories.

Unlock Create: Story and build the Writing Desk

Open the Technology Tree and switch to the Theology tab. The recipe you need is Create: Story, which sits under the Books I node alongside Writing Supplies and Writing Basics.

Spend the points to research the node. Until it is unlocked, the Story will not appear in the Writing Desk menu at all, even if you are carrying every ingredient.
Build the Writing Desk in the Writing Room of the Writing Basement. The blueprint costs 4 Wooden Plank, 6 Bronze Nails, and 1 Polished Bronze, so have the Polished Bronze ready before you walk down there.

Why the Story needs Insanity to craft

Most recipes either ignore Insanity or push it up. The Story does the opposite: every tick of the craft subtracts 1 Insanity, treating your meter as a resource. With the purple bar at zero there is nothing to spend, and the craft cannot run.

Insanity itself lowers your maximum Energy while it is high, which is the trade-off. It climbs when you do shady work and falls with fire water or a proper sleep, but only when your character is actually tired.

How to raise Insanity before writing

Skip your sleep. Stay awake long enough for the Lack of sleep status to appear, which warns that work will cost more Energy and that Insanity will rise faster than normal.
Do heavy manual work while tired. Chopping trees out in the Yard is the simplest option, and the sleep-deprived multiplier makes each swing push the purple bar up quicker.
Head to the Morgue and work on a corpse. Autopsies and pulling parts out of bodies count as the “shady stuff” the Insanity tooltip refers to, and they fill the bar faster than chopping alone.

Bank more Insanity than a single Story needs. The bar drains for the whole duration of the craft, so a nearly full meter lets you queue several Stories in one sitting.

What drains your Insanity by accident

Everything that normally counts as self-care works against you here. Hold off on these until the writing is done:

  • Food with an Insanity penalty, such as Berry Pie at +27 Energy and -3 Insanity.
  • Fire water, which is a direct Insanity reducer.
  • Sleeping while tired, which clears Insanity along with the Lack of sleep status.

Craft the Story and confirm it worked

Return to the Writing Basement with 1 Faith, 1 Clean Paper, and 1 Ink, and interact with the Writing Desk to open its recipe list.

Select the Story and press [E] Craft, or use Add to Queue if you are making a batch. The craft only begins if the purple Insanity bar has something in it.
Watch the Insanity bar while the craft runs. Seeing it tick down as the progress fills is the confirmation that the recipe is working correctly, and the finished Story lands in your inventory when the bar of progress completes.

Once the Stories are written you can safely sleep or eat your way back down to a normal Insanity level and recover the Energy ceiling you gave up. The cycle of staying awake, doing morgue work, then writing is the loop to repeat every time you need a fresh batch of Stories for the church.
