Graveyard Keeper 2: How to Get Melted Fat

Melted Fat is one of those Graveyard Keeper 2 materials that looks trivial on paper and then quietly stalls an entire playthrough. The recipe itself is cheap. The problem is that the station it runs on, the Distillation Cube, sits behind a quest chain and two technologies that most players do not realize are connected.

Quick answer: Make Melted Fat in the Alchemy Lab’s Distillation Cube. The ingredients are 1 Fat, 1 Pottery Bowl plus 1 Fire fuel point. Unlock the recipe through the Alchemy, Distillation tech and the fairy summoning quest.

Melted Fat recipe and ingredients

Once the Distillation Cube exists, open its crafting menu and the Melted Fat entry is listed with everything it consumes. It is a single-slot conversion, so fat is the only body part involved.

Melted Fat feeds into oiled planks, which is why people tend to hit this wall while trying to push their carpentry chain forward rather than while doing alchemy.

What gates the Distillation Cube

Two separate systems have to line up before the blueprint becomes buildable. Having alchemy mastery points alone is not enough, which is the usual source of confusion.

Research Alchemy, Basic and Alchemy, Distillation in the Tech Tree.
Progress the quest chain about summoning the Fairy, which opens the Alchemy Lab.
Have Planks, Wooden Beams, and Flask Shelf parts on hand for construction.

Unlock the lab through the fairy summoning quest

Open the Character Quests menu and look at the village relationship tree. The nodes here show which characters are tied to which unlocks, and the Plague Doctor and tavern lines are the ones that matter for distillation.

Select the Dust in the Kitchen node, whose objective reads “Figure out how to summon the Fairy.” Locked nodes show as question marks until the prerequisite relationship is built up.

Build up friendship at the tavern and talk to the contact standing behind it. That conversation is what moves the fairy line forward and eventually introduces Larry.

Back at Home, Larry reveals a door set into the floor. Repair the trapdoor to open the cellar beneath your base, which is the part of the quest that flips the alchemy content on.

Opening the cellar does not mean you build the Distillation Cube there. The cube goes in the alchemy tower, not at your main base.

Research Alchemy, Basic and Alchemy, Distillation

Open the Tech Tree and move to the anatomy and alchemy branch. Alchemy, Basic comes first, then Alchemy, Distillation, and the tooltip on the second one is where the Distillation Cube blueprint is listed. Until both are purchased, the build menu in the lab will not offer the cube at all.

Research costs Science, and Science is not unlimited early on. The writing desk that keeps Science flowing needs polished bronze, which is not available until after the battle that closes out the demo, so anyone playing the demo build can run dry and be unable to buy distillation at all.

Build the Distillation Cube in the Alchemy Lab

Open the world map and travel to the Inquisition Base. It is a separate location from Home and the Town, and the lab is only there.

Cross the camp yard past the kiln and use the [E] Enter prompt on the tower door to step inside the Alchemy Lab.

Open the lab’s build menu and select the Distillation Cube blueprint. It asks for Planks, Wooden Beams, and Flask Shelf parts, then places the station in the room.

How to confirm Melted Fat is unlocked

Interact with the finished Distillation Cube and check its recipe list. If Melted Fat appears with its fat, pottery bowl, and fire icons rather than staying hidden, the quest and tech requirements are both satisfied. Load in one fat, one pottery bowl, and a point of fire, run the craft, and the Melted Fat should land in your inventory ready for oiled planks.
