Insanity in Graveyard Keeper 2 is the purple portion of your energy bar in the top-left corner of the screen. As it grows, it caps how much energy you can hold, so a meal that should top you off leaves you short. Eating regular food will not clear it. You lower insanity by sleeping while tired, drinking beer, or eating baked goods.
Quick answer: The moment the blue “Zz” tired icon appears, sleep in your bed for the greatest one-time reduction. Until then, use beer (-12 insanity) or Berry Pie (-3 insanity) between rests to hold the meter down.
What insanity does to your energy bar
Insanity has no hallucination or visual-world effect. Instead, it limits how much energy you can store. Filling the purple section pushes into the energy bar and lowers its maximum, so a Keeper accustomed to a full blue bar may become capped far below it; meals then fill that reduced space quickly and seem ineffective.
Insanity rises from corpse handling and autopsies, extended crafting or labor at workstations, and remaining awake for too long. Having little energy accelerates the increase, creating a cycle of cheap mushrooms, work, and confusion over weak recovery. Tiredness is the biggest trigger: after the blue “Zz” icon appears, every action produces extra insanity.

Sleep is the only option that clears a genuinely high meter in one go. Everything else chips away at it, which works if you catch the problem early but falls apart once the purple bar has swallowed half your energy.
| Method | Insanity | Energy | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep while tired | Large, fixed amount | Full restore | Bed in your house |
| Beer | -12 | +52 | Tavern keeper |
| Berry Pie | -3 | +30 | Kitchen Oven |
| Other baked goods | -3 to -5 | Varies | Kitchen Oven |
Sleep in your bed when the tired icon appears
Of the available cures, sleeping is the most effective, but it affects insanity only after your Keeper becomes tired. A blue, circular “Zz” symbol appears near the top edge of the screen to indicate this, generally along with a sound. The condition begins after about two in-game days without sleep, rather than when energy reaches zero.

Resting without the icon restores energy but leaves the purple bar unchanged, meaning those in-game hours provide only half the value. Rest removes a fixed quantity, not the entire meter. When insanity has consumed half your energy bar, some will still be present after waking.
Buy beer from the tavern keeper for a fast top-up
For a work session where losing hours to sleep is not an option, beer gives the largest reduction from one consumable. Visit the village tavern and trade with its barkeeper, Horadric. Its tooltip shows -12 insanity and +52 energy when consumed.

The drawback is the price. Each beer uses coins, and early in the game you cannot make it yourself, turning frequent use into a continuous drain on your money. Save it for emergencies, then return home and sleep after the meter becomes high.

Bake pies at the Kitchen Oven for a sustainable supply
For sustained use, baked food costs the least. Each Berry Pie restores 30 energy and lowers insanity by 3 insanity; the Kitchen Oven or Kitchen Oven II produces four from 4 dough and 6 berries. Recipes such as croissants offer similar -3 to -5 results, so inspect the oven’s recipe tooltip before spending ingredients to find the best reduction.
A working supply chain starts with a farm. Grow wheat, mill it to flour, make dough from the flour, and maintain the kitchen firewood rack so fuel is available. Three bushes by the house and five additional ones in the village provide plentiful free berries, making it worthwhile to harvest each bush you encounter. With pies available in bulk, you can work for long periods without insanity becoming troublesome.
Prepare multiple dishes, then consume them consecutively; that applies their insanity reductions together rather than spacing them out between jobs.
Perks that reduce insanity
Certain perks lower insanity themselves. Butcher’s Son is an example and reduces it up to a specified amount, so check perk descriptions for insanity benefits when investing points instead of choosing only for gathering speed.
Axeman, Carpenter, and Blacksmith are among the perks that call their associated activity relaxing. In the demo build, those claims have shown no measurable insanity reduction, so they should not be the foundation of your strategy.
How to confirm insanity actually dropped
Check the upper-left display. The purple segment ought to contract, while the blue energy section should extend farther than before. When food brings you nearly to a full bar instead of stopping early, your energy cap has improved.
Once insanity occupies a substantial part of the energy bar, reducing it takes several in-game days of regular food and sleep. One rest will not restore the bar instantly, but it will fall if you stop sustaining it through all-night morgue shifts. The basic routine is to complete your current task, then sleep as soon as the “Zz” icon appears; following that rule keeps insanity from reaching rescue levels.
