The Gardener Stand turns a single zombie into a full-time farmhand. Once it is built and staffed, that zombie plants seeds, harvests the finished crop, and drops the produce into a nearby chest while you are off doing anything else. The setup only takes a few minutes, but it fails silently if you skip one detail, and the game never tells you which one.
Quick answer: Build the Gardener Stand at the garden blueprint table, place a zombie on it, craft crop Tablets onto the garden beds, and equip the zombie with a shovel so its farming mastery is high enough to work.
What you need before the Gardener Stand works
Four things have to line up. Miss any one of them and the zombie will stand in the garden doing nothing, which is the most common way this setup goes wrong.
- The Gardener Stand unlocked on the Tech Tree and built at the garden blueprint table.
- A zombie physically carried over and placed on the stand.
- A shovel equipped on that zombie to raise its farming mastery.
- Crop Tablets placed over the garden beds you want worked, plus seeds in a garden chest.
The stand itself is cheap. It calls for 4 Wooden Planks, plus bronze details and bronze nails, all of which you will already be producing by the time the recipe unlocks. A second stand becomes worthwhile later, once you expand the garden and have more beds than one zombie can keep up with.

Tablets are not permanent. Destroy one at the blueprint table and build a different crop tablet to change what a bed grows, but clear the existing harvest first, because a zombie farmer only touches the crop named on the tablet.
Zombie not farming? Equip a shovel
A zombie standing motionless at the Gardener Stand almost always has too little farming mastery. Farming runs off the farming stat, and the shovel is the tool that raises it, the same way an axe covers crafting and woodcutting, a hammer covers metallurgy, a pickaxe covers mining, and a fishing rod covers fishing.
Walk up to the zombie, press Inspect, and open the Character tab. Slot in a shovel there. A Bronze Shovel gives Mastery +2, which is enough to get most gardeners moving, and better shovels give bigger boosts as you unlock them.

You know it worked when the zombie picks up the tool and starts digging the assigned beds on its own. From that point it cycles through planting and harvesting without further input, and produce begins appearing in the garden chest.

Keeping the garden self-sufficient
Farmer zombies are close to hands-off compared with crafting zombies, which need a constant supply of materials and a queue of items to make. Your only recurring chore is topping up the seed chest and emptying the output chest so there is space for the next harvest.
Chests and workers are locked to their zone. A garden chest will not be touched by a kitchen worker, and a kitchen porter will not wander out to collect crops, so moving produce between the garden, the kitchen, the brewery and the rest of the base stays your job. A Zombie Supplier Station with a courier zombie on it will shuttle goods within a single zone, but it cannot cross into another.
Upgrading a farmer zombie’s mastery and perks
Working zombies accumulate gems. Farming produces green points, and once a zombie banks enough of them you can spend them on permanent upgrades, including an “Add mastery +1” option that lifts its farming level without relying on a better tool. Higher mastery unlocks more advanced work and, with farming perks, larger harvests.

How many perks a zombie can ever hold is fixed by its body. Each red skull unlocks one perk slot, and early Bronze Zombie Collars cap that at five. If you plan to build a dedicated farmer, save red-skull body parts from corpses you are not burying and add them on the Autopsy Table before committing a zombie to the Gardener Stand.
Check your zombies periodically. Gems build up quietly, and an unspent balance means a gardener is working below the yield it could be producing.
Once a shovel-equipped zombie is on the stand with tablets over every bed, the garden more or less runs itself. The only thing standing between you and a permanent food surplus after that is remembering to empty the chest.
