Grave fences are one of the cheapest ways to push a cemetery plot’s quality score up in Graveyard Keeper, and they sit behind two crafting stations rather than the graveyard blueprint menu. That distinction trips up a lot of keepers who stand at the gravesite blueprint station looking for a fence option that will never appear there.
Quick answer: Craft a Wooden grave fence at the Carpenter’s Workbench or a Stone grave fence at the Stone cutter, then interact with a buried grave and fill its empty “No grave fence” slot.
Grave fence tiers and what each one adds
Every fence slots into the same spot on a grave, so the only thing that separates the tiers is the quality value and the material cost. Wood is the entry point, stone is the mid-game workhorse, and the numbered stone and marble variants climb from there.

Installing or removing any grave decoration costs 5 energy, so plan a decorating run when your energy bar is healthy rather than at the tail end of a long work day.
Wooden grave fences at the Carpenter’s Workbench
The Carpenter’s Workbench is built from the Yard blueprint menu in the Workyard, and it needs 4 Flitch, 12 Wooden planks, and 4 Simple iron parts. Unlocking it means taking the Woodworking node in the building branch of the technology tree first.
Once the bench is standing, its craft list holds three grave items side by side: Wooden marker, Wooden grave fence, and Wooden cross. Each fence consumes a single plank and a small amount of energy, and planks can be cut at the same bench from the materials tab.
The Sawhorse is not a substitute. It handles wooden markers only, so if that is the station you have been checking, no fence recipe will show up no matter how much wood you feed it.
Upgrading to the Carpenter’s workbench II halves the energy cost per fence from 10 to 5 while keeping the same one-plank recipe. Spare wooden decorations that you never install can be broken down at the chopping spot, returning 4 Firewood each.
Stone grave fences at the Stone cutter
The Stone cutter sits in the same Workyard area and handles the stone side of the graveyard catalogue, including the Gravestone and the Stone grave fence. A Stone grave fence costs 2× A piece of stone and 20 energy at the base station, dropping to 10 energy at the Stone cutter II.
Because the fence doubles the wooden version’s value for two stone, it is usually worth switching over as soon as you have a steady quarry supply. Stone decorations you no longer need can be recycled back at the Stone cutter, recovering roughly half their materials.
Unlocking higher-tier fences in the Theology tree
Everything above the base stone fence comes from research. Open the Technologies menu, switch to the Theology tab, and look for the Graveyard Enhancement node. That node carries “Create Stone grave fence II”, which adds +3 to a grave and unlocks at the same cluster that feeds into Grave Monuments and the Stone sculpture line.
If wooden fences are not appearing in your Carpenter’s Workbench list at all, the missing piece is usually the Simple Gravestones technology, also found under Theology. Research it before blaming the workbench tier.
Fences are also worth putting on the study table before you mass-produce them. A Wooden grave fence studies for 20 blue tech points and a Stone grave fence for 30, each costing 5 energy plus a small amount of Faith and Science.
Installing a grave fence on a gravesite
A fence only counts once it is physically attached to a grave that already holds a body. Crafting a stack and leaving them in your inventory does nothing for the graveyard rating.
You will know it worked when the slot stops reading “No grave fence” and the grave’s quality number climbs by the fence’s value. Old, neglected plots often start deep in the negatives, so watch that figure move toward zero and above as you work down the rows.
The graveyard fence is a separate build
The perimeter fence around the cemetery is not a grave decoration and does not come from either crafting station. After you upgrade the church for the first time, the Fix the Fence job unlocks at the graveyard, costing 10× Nails, 10× Wooden planks, and 6× A piece of stone, and it uses no energy.
Repairing it adds +10 Graveyard Rating, and the later stone fence build adds another +20. Those numbers apply to the whole graveyard rather than any single plot, so they stack on top of everything your individual fences are contributing.
Keep the workflow simple once it is running. Cut planks or mine stone in bulk, batch-craft fences at the upgraded station to halve the energy drain, then do a single decorating pass through the graveyard filling every empty fence slot before you bury the next round of bodies.
