Grounded 2: How to Reach The Abyss in Into the Abyss

The deep gate under Skunk Pond only opens once you equip the full three-piece Diving Suit and clear the SCAB 2.0 scanner.

The deep gate under Skunk Pond only opens once you equip the full three-piece Diving Suit and clear the SCAB 2.0 scanner.

The Abyss is the deepest region beneath Skunk Pond, and it stays sealed until you meet one hard requirement. You cannot swim straight to the bottom and drop in. The path runs through an Ominent lab called the Diving Station, and a scanner there blocks the final hatch until you are wearing the complete Diving Suit.

Quick answer: Collect all three Aquatic Optical Disks to unlock the Diving Helmet, Diving Suit Chestplate, and Diving Boots recipes, craft and equip the full suit, then take the Diving Station south of Skunk Pond down to the SCAB 2.0 Scanner and open the moon pool hatch.

What you need to enter The Abyss

The entry gate checks one thing. When you reach the scanner deep in the Diving Station, it confirms whether all three Diving Suit pieces are equipped. Nothing else opens the hatch, so the whole run is really about finishing that suit first.

RequirementWhy it matters
Three Aquatic Optical DisksEach disk unlocks one Diving Suit recipe at a Ranger Station Science Shop.
About 4,500 Raw ScienceRoughly 1,500 Raw Science per suit recipe.

Koi Scale Armor (recommended)Helps you survive the underwater route down to the station.

Bring support gear for the underwater fights along the way. A Spicy Spear and a Harpoon Gun handle most threats, and Croakwurst bombs give you extra breathing room. The Harpoon Gun uses Sunken Bone x2, Horsetail Stem x1, and Eelgrass Strand x2, while Croakwurst needs Raw Tadpole Meat x2, an O.R.C. Receiver x1, Unstable Goo x1, and Sunken Bone x1.

Where to find all three Aquatic Optical Disks

Each disk sits in a different part of the expanded pond area. Grab all three before you spend Raw Science, then insert them at a Ranger Station under the Science Shop to unlock the matching recipe.

Disk locationRecipe unlockedCost
Diving Station lab, on the bench insideDiving Helmet1,500 Raw Science
Bridge, on top of the structure right of Skunk PondDiving Suit Chestplate1,500 Raw Science
Gnarly Bark tree, in the elevated classroom-like hollowDiving Boots1,500 Raw Science

The Gnarly Bark disk takes the most climbing. Start near the memorial, head left, and ride an Orb Weaver Buggy up the mushrooms to a cave entrance. The buggy cannot come inside, so continue on foot, work your way higher, and follow the mushrooms along the outside of the tree to a small cave opening where the disk sits on a body.

The Bridge disk is the easiest outdoor pickup. Climb the planks to the top, where a Mess Officer Funk guards the area. You can fight it with a good gas mask like the Mantis Helmet, but you can also grab the disk and leave without engaging.

Craft the full Diving Suit

With the three recipes unlocked, build every piece at a Workbench. The materials are the real time sink because Quartz Glass and Fire Bricks require two new production stations.

PieceMaterials
Diving HelmetQuartz Glass x3, Toe Biter Shell x2, Cattail Fluff x2, Wax x1
Diving Suit ChestplateChrysalis Leather x5, Quartz Glass x2, Cattail Fluff x5, Lint Rope x4
Diving BootsChrysalis Leather x4, Fire Brick x2, Toe Biter Shell x4, Wax x3

Toe Biter Shells drop from regular Toe Biters and Toe Biter Nymphs. Wax hides on the underside of floating lilypads in the Koi Pond, and Cattail Fluff grows in the Bridge Biome near marshy edges. Chrysalis Leather hangs from leaves in the veggie garden’s potato and carrot areas, and Lint Rope comes from Lint Clumps harvested with a Tier 3 chopping tool, then spun at a Spinning Wheel.

Quartz Glass and Fire Bricks

Both feed off Phantom Quartz, found in the underground cave on the east side of the Gnarly Bark tree where the pond meets the trunk. Gather plenty, since the full set eats a lot. Then build the two stations that process it.

StationBuild cost
QuernClay x4, Sturdy Quartzite Shard x3, Lint Rope x2, Pinecone Piece x3, Striped Scorpion Chunk x2
KilnFire Brick x8, EverChar Coal Chunk x5, Green Shield Bug Parts x3, Rust x4, Horsetail Stem x3

Run Phantom Quartz through the Quern to make Crushed Quartz, then analyze it to unlock its recipes. Combine Clay x4 with Crushed Quartz x1 in the Oven for Fire Bricks, and Crushed Quartz x2 with Horsetail Stem x1 for Quartz Glass. Horsetails come from underwater or dry land patches, cut with a tier two snipper or axe.

Route to the Diving Station and the Abyss hatch

Once the suit is crafted and repaired, head for the descent. Clear your inventory before you go, because the run down is long and you will want space for drops and loot.

Travel to the Ranger Outpost: Skunk Pond in the middle of the water. This is your surface anchor for the whole route.

Dive down and follow the large pipe directly beneath the outpost to the bottom of the pond. Keep descending through the darker, colder water.
Follow the pipe as it runs southeast into a deep canyon. The Diving Station entrance sits at the end of that line. A large Toe Biter patrols nearby, so you are close to the correct depth once you spot it.

Climb the ladder into the station hatch, move through the corridors, and use the Pneumatic Transit System tube to reach the moon pool room deeper in the facility. The map is unavailable in here, so navigate on foot.
Approach the SCAB 2.0 Scanner at the pool. On your first visit it checks for the full Diving Suit. With everything equipped, access is granted and the floor hatch opens.

Jump through the hatch into the depths. The boots make you walk down the shaft rather than swim, and you cannot move sideways during the long drop. When the descent ends, you have officially reached The Abyss.

How to confirm you’re in and set up fast travel

You know it worked when the scanner reads ACCESS GRANTED, the hatch opens, and the drop lands you in the Abyss touchdown zone. The Abyss has its own separate map split into regions such as the Touchdown Zone, Galleries, Rocky Chamber, and Monitoring Station.

Swim to Abyss Outpost #1 and climb inside. It holds a transport tube that lets you fast travel to and from the region later. After that first descent, an elevator also becomes available at the station, skipping the 30-second to one-minute drop on every return trip.

If the scanner keeps denying access, one of the three suit pieces is missing or unequipped. It only accepts the complete set, so double-check that the Diving Helmet, Diving Suit Chestplate, and Diving Boots are all worn at once.

Note: the full suit removes chill and gives unlimited oxygen inside the Abyss, but the boots stop you from swimming. For ordinary pond exploration outside the Abyss, wearing just the helmet and chestplate keeps you mobile in the water. Inside the Abyss itself, the complete set is required to get in.
