Police in GTA 6 are more persistent than in any earlier game in the series, but they are not all-knowing. Officers only come after you once a crime is actually reported, and each thing they know about you shows up as an icon under your wanted stars. Strip those clues away and the pursuit falls apart before it ever spreads across the city.

How GTA 6 police recognize you
A pursuit does not start on its own. There has to be a witness who reports the crime, or an alarm that trips, before officers begin looking for you. Once that happens, the police lock onto specific details about the suspect, and those details are shown as small icons beneath your wanted level.
Each icon represents one piece of information the police hold, and each one has a matching counter. Remove the clue and you remove that part of their search.

Ditch the vehicle the police tagged
Your car is one of the biggest clues the police carry. If the vehicle icon appears, officers are actively watching for that ride, so keeping it only helps them find you.
Hide your face and change your outfit
The same logic applies to how you look. A mask worn during the crime stops the police from ever receiving a description of your face. It also blocks CCTV cameras, so if you put the mask on before you act, a nearby camera captures nothing useful.
Your clothing is tracked separately. Switching into a different outfit disrupts what the officers think you were wearing, which erases another line on their description of the suspect.
Note: The mask is most effective when it goes on ahead of the crime, not after. Once a witness or camera has already logged your face, the description is out there.
Split up when playing as Jason and Lucia
Officers can recognize when the two protagonists are partners in a crime. If the two-person icon shows up under your stars, the police are treating Jason and Lucia as a pair. Separating forces them to divide their attention, which thins out the pursuit on each of you.
Escaping past a three-star wanted level
Once your wanted level climbs beyond three stars, the situation gets serious. Busy streets become much harder to navigate, and you can end up Busted quickly if you stay exposed. At this point the goal is to break line of sight and disappear off the radar.
- Leave your vehicle behind rather than driving through the chaos.
- Cut through alleys and side streets where cars struggle to follow.
- Jump over fences to move where the police cannot easily give chase.
You know it worked when the pursuit shifts off you and your wanted stars fade. If they keep tracking you, it usually means one of the clues, such as your face or vehicle, is still active.
The six-star wanted level returns
One of the bigger changes is the return of the six-star wanted level. Reaching it turns the whole city into chaos, so the smartest play is to manage the clues early. Mask up before the crime, keep your vehicle and outfit clean, and split up when needed, and you can shut down a chase long before it ever escalates that far.
