Halo: Combat Evolved is remembered for two things, and one of them is multiplayer. So the biggest question hanging over Halo: Campaign Evolved is simple. Does the remake bring back the fights that made the original a system-seller, or is it something else entirely?

Quick answer: There is no competitive PvP in Halo: Campaign Evolved. You can play the entire campaign cooperatively with up to four players online, or in two-player split-screen on consoles, with full cross-play.

No competitive PvP at launch

Halo: Campaign Evolved ships without any head-to-head multiplayer. There is no Slayer, no Capture the Flag, no Team Deathmatch, and no ranked playlists. The classic multiplayer maps from the original are not remastered here, and there are no versus modes tucked into the package.

Halo Studios built this release as a campaign remake, full stop. The team put its work into Unreal Engine 5 visuals, refined combat, an expanded arsenal, new vehicles, three new story missions, and the largest set of gameplay-modifying Skulls in any Halo campaign. Rebuilding and balancing a competitive suite was not part of that plan.

Note: A campaign-only remaster is not new for the series. The 2011 Combat Evolved Anniversary release also launched without its own standalone versus suite. If PvP is what you want right now, Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection remain the places to play it.

Four-player online co-op

The multiplayer that does exist is cooperative. Up to four players can run the full campaign together online, which is a first for this story. The original was designed around two-player co-op, so the levels here have been reworked for a larger squad.

Weapon spawns scale with the number of players in your session, and enemy difficulty adjusts automatically based on how many people are playing. Level layouts and vehicle placement have been adjusted so a full team of four can move through the wider spaces without anyone getting stuck on foot. All 13 campaign missions are playable together, including the new Operation: METEORITE missions set a year before the original story.

Co-op is invite-based. You bring in friends directly, and there is no public matchmaking that pairs you with random players for campaign missions.

Split-screen co-op on consoles

Couch co-op returns, but only on consoles. Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 support two-player local split-screen across every campaign mission. Each player needs a separate account. There is no split-screen on PC, so a second local player is a console-only feature.

Cross-play and cross-progression

Online co-op works across platforms. Players on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 can drop into the same session together. Cross-progression carries your save between platforms when you link a Microsoft account, so you can start on one system and continue on another.

You can also play the campaign solo and fully offline. Split-screen works offline on consoles, but online co-op needs an internet connection.

Will PvP be added later?

There is no confirmation that competitive multiplayer is coming to Halo: Campaign Evolved after launch. Halo Studios has only announced campaign and co-op features, and no roadmap for versus modes has been shared. Treat the game as a co-op campaign package for now, with anything beyond that unconfirmed.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, marking Master Chief’s first appearance on a PlayStation console. If you were hoping to jump into Slayer with friends across platforms, that is not what this release offers. If you have ever wanted to fight through Alpha Halo with a full four-player fireteam, that is exactly what it is built for.
