How to Fish will let you land a lobster, a sea urchin, and something called a Voxelfish. The pairing is never vague. Each species sits on a specific island and answers to a specific rod and bait.
Quick answer: Travel to the species’ island, equip the listed rod and bait, then cast. Spider Crab needs an Empty Beer Can at the Lighthouse. Giant Piranha needs a Modified Leech on Island 2 (Forest).

How catches actually work
Location, rod, and bait have to line up. A fish from Island 4 (Rocks) will not bite a Beginner Lure on Island 2 (Forest). Most later species also lock to one lure tier, so swapping islands without swapping bait wastes casts.
The Lighthouse is crab gear. Island 2 (Forest) is where a Fishing Rod and extra lures show up, and that is when ordinary fish enter the mix. From Island 3 (Desert) onward, each new island uses a higher lure. A few early targets still want food or junk instead of a named lure.

The roster is not limited to fish. Crabs, shrimp, lobster, a sea urchin, and a seahorse all count. The listed set is still growing, so treat the tables as the current catalog rather than a finished encyclopedia.

You cannot farm the full list from the first dock. Coordinates arrive after the local quest, and each new island brings the next bait tier with it.

Every species, rod, and bait
Use this catalog when you already know which island you can reach. Rock Crab appears twice because both Free Lure and Hot Dog work. Pike and Goldfish accept Free Lure or Beginner Lure.

Boss species and special baits
Two bosses sit outside the normal lure ladder. They still live on early islands, but they ignore Free Lure, Hot Dog, and Beginner Lure. You need the specialized bait for that fight.
| Boss | Location | Bait |
|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab | Lighthouse | Empty Beer Can |
| Giant Piranha | Island 2 (Forest) | Modified Leech |
Do not confuse Giant Piranha with the regular Piranha. The smaller one still takes Crab Fishing Rod and Hot Dog on Island 2 (Forest). The boss wants Modified Leech. Spider Crab is also separate from Rock Crab, which remains a standard Lighthouse catch.
Once the right island, rod, and bait are together, the species can come up. If the line stays empty, change bait before you assume you are on the wrong map. The bosses are the only catches that demand junk or a modified bait instead of the island’s usual lure.
