How to Fish: How to Defeat All Bosses

Bait, fight windows, and NPC hand-ins for every How to Fish boss.

Bait, fight windows, and NPC hand-ins for every How to Fish boss.

New islands in How to Fish stay locked until the right boss is dead and the right trophy is back in an NPC’s hands. Fishing more will not open the map. The fight only starts after the local quest gives you a specific bait, and the route only updates after you turn the body in.

Quick answer: Spawn the boss with its listed bait, sidestep the committed attack, then dump damage into that window. Keep the trophy and hand it to the NPC before you expect new coordinates.

How to start a How to Fish boss fight

A stronger gun cannot spawn a missing boss. If nothing has appeared, the blocker is the quest, the bait, or a previous hand-in. Talk to the island NPC first, finish the item they asked for, then use that bait on your rod.

Most story bosses follow the same loop. Finish the local request, prepare the trigger, win the fight, keep the important drop, and return it. Killing the creature is only half of the unlock. If the Radar still points at the same rock, check the hand-in before you buy another attachment.

Story travel is carried by five fights. Spider Crab opens the boat. Giant Piranha opens Island 3. Pufferfish opens Island 4. Albatross, the terrorizing bird on the rocks, opens the military and volcano route. Mutated Bowhead Whale closes the chain. The Old Pike, Blue Shark, Tuna, Goblin Shark, and the unmutated Bowhead Whale sit beside that path as extra bosses or setup kills.

Every boss bait and location

Use this table to confirm you are holding the correct trigger before you spend money on the fight.

Two baits are not shop items. The Empty Beer Can comes back after you feed a Beer Can to the Lighthouse Keeper. The Carrot comes from the tourist under the tree after you give him a Needlefish. The Modified Leech is returned after you feed three leeches to the lady by the lake on Island 2. Albatross and Mutated Bowhead Whale both use another boss as the lure.

Boss fight rules that apply everywhere

Watch the white bar under the boss health pool. When that bar empties, the boss leaves and the attempt resets. Standing too far away, chasing jumps, or losing time on trash can burn the timer even if you are still alive.

Eat before you cast. Hunger turns a long fight into a loss even when the pattern is readable. Bring healing into Giant Piranha and both whale fights. Dynamite costs 25 and is built for a short burst on a path you can predict, not as a full replacement for a gun.

Buy food and a reliable ranged weapon after the boss can already spawn. If recoil is wasting shots, buy control. If shots are landing and the bar barely moves, buy damage. Inspect drops before you sell anything. Several unlocks fail if the trophy is gone.

How to defeat charge bosses

Spider Crab, The Old Pike, Blue Shark, and Tuna all commit to a rush. The opening appears after that rush, not before it. Do not try to stun them yourself.

Spider Crab

This is the Lighthouse gate. Stay close enough that it charges instead of jumping. A jump is hard to read and burns the escape timer.

Buy a Beer Can, feed it to the Lighthouse Keeper, and take the Empty Beer Can he gives back. Equip it and pull the Spider Crab out of the water.
Hold a short gap so the crab commits to a rush. Step sideways as it closes. After the miss it is stunned long enough for about three or four melee hits.
Back off before the next rush, then force the same charge again. Feed the meat to the Lighthouse Keeper when it dies. He hands over the boat keys, which is the check that the quest is done.

The Old Pike

Summon it with the Beginner Boss Lure on Island 2. It flops in close and swings its tail. The hits hurt, but they are not a wipe if you already bought a shotgun. Keep shooting through the flop. This is the lightest boss fight in the set.

Blue Shark

The Standard Boss Lure brings it up on Island 3. It is the kill that turns the Grill on. The shark drives in with a spinning charge, and a close shark almost always connects. Stay wide, keep the shotgun on it, and do not let it close the gap. A bullet upgrade before the second-island summon makes the bar drop much faster.

After the kill, talk to the NPC beside the Grill. The lighter is the proof the fight counted. Cooked fish then sell at a 1.5x multiplier.

Tuna

Island 4 is small, so the Tuna’s throw is hard to leave. Use the Professional Boss Lure, then answer the charge with a shotgun. Extra bullet upgrades matter more here than a fancy sidestep because there is almost no room to kite. Pick the body up when it dies. You still need it on the ground for Albatross.

How to defeat the Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, and Albatross

These three win by controlling space. One floods the arena with smaller fish. One rolls you down if you stand still. One stays at range and attacks from the air.

Giant Piranha

Feed three leeches to the lady by the lake, take the Modified Leech, and reel. You cannot skip this fight if you want Island 3. The boss jumps and bites, and it arrives with a pack of smaller piranhas.

Thin the pack until you can track the boss cleanly, then put the shotgun on the Giant Piranha. Do not spend the whole timer deleting every minion. When the boss jumps, move sideways. Bring healing for the bite. Carry the skeleton back to the lady. She gives Island 3 coordinates when the hand-in is accepted.

Pufferfish

Catch a Needlefish, give it to the tourist under the tree, and use the Carrot he returns. The Pufferfish rolls in a straight, slow line. Open ground is what gets you killed. Trees break that line and create a shooting window.

Put two shotgun shells into it, then run to the opposite side so it has to turn and chase.
Shoot again from the new angle and keep relocating before it pins you against a rock. Distance matters more than a pricier gun.
Take the fin to the tourist. Island 4 coordinates appear after that hand-in, not at the moment the health bar hits zero.

Albatross

Lay the caught Tuna on the ground and wait a few seconds. The bird keeps long range, which makes a shotgun a poor choice. A sniper rifle or Uzi is the workable option. Its drop attack deals heavy damage.

Stand under cover while it is farthest out. That is the rain. The clean shots are right after the rain stops, and again when it climbs after a charge. Come back out, land the shots, and return to cover. Take the head to the island NPC. The next coordinates are the check that the fight is finished.

How to defeat the Bowhead Whale

Island 5 holds Goblin Shark, Bowhead Whale, and Mutated Bowhead Whale. Goblin Shark comes up on the Scientific Boss Lure. The whale sequence is the real end of the story route.

Work with the scientist first and take the Fish Bucket she prepares. Catch and defeat the Bowhead Whale, then carry that body to the volcano and throw it in. Do not sell it and do not treat this like an earlier trophy turn-in. The volcano step is what starts Mutated Bowhead Whale.

Both whale versions punish you for standing under a landing. When the whale is in the air, run as far as the arena allows. A body slam is usually fatal. Stock healing before you start. Buy the Assault Rifle and every upgrade on it. The mutated form also sheds lava that can kill on contact, so treat those pools as instant-fail ground.

Stay in the volcano fight area. Dragging the encounter toward the boat can break the fight, and the water is not a safe zone. After a landing, give the body space before you walk back in. The follow-up movement is what catches people who sprint in to shoot too early.

How to confirm a boss unlock worked

A dead health bar is not the unlock. The island changes when the local NPC takes the item and the Radar picks up a new point.

If the boss never appeared, you are still on bait or an earlier NPC step. If it appeared and you died, fix food, distance, or the gun. If it died and the map did not move, the trophy never reached the NPC.
