How to Fish: How to Get to the Fifth Island (Volcano)

Unlock the volcano route, then follow the radar marker north to reach the game's final island by boat.

Unlock the volcano route, then follow the radar marker north to reach the game’s final island by boat.

The fifth island in How to Fish is the Volcano, the game’s final stop before the mainland. It is home to the military camp, the hazmat scientist, and the Bowhead Whale sequence. Reaching it comes down to two things. You need the route unlocked, and then you sail there by following the colored marker on your boat’s radar.

Quick answer: Defeat the Albatross on the Rocks island (the fourth island) and return its head to the shop NPC to receive the final coordinates. Then board your boat, follow the pink marker on the radar heading north, and park on the black sand beach when the smoking volcano appears.

Unlock the volcano route before you sail

The Volcano marker only appears on your radar after you finish the Rocks island quest. The radar guides you along coordinates you already own. It does not open a new island on its own, so the hand-in has to come first.

On the Rocks island, use the Professional Boss Lure to catch a Tuna, then place the Tuna on dry ground to summon the Albatross, the large bird the shop NPC warns you about. After you kill it, keep the Albatross Head and return it to the islander inside the shop. That hand-in gives you the coordinates that light up the volcano.

Note: killing the boss is only half the job. If you sell or cook the head instead of handing it in, the radar will not update and no new marker will appear.

Sail to the Volcano island

Once the marker is active, the trip itself is straightforward. The volcano sits directly north of the Rocks island and is hard to miss thanks to its smoke plume.

Walk to the dock and board your boat. Make sure the boat is drivable with the keys you earned earlier in the game.

Interact with the steering wheel to start driving. You must unequip any held item first, since the prompt reads Drive [E] (Unequip item first).

Steer toward the volcano marker on the green radar screen and head north. Keep the marker centered as you cross open water.
Continue driving straight until the smoking volcano island appears on the horizon, showing black sand and red lava flows. Stay on course until the shoreline renders in full.

Park the boat on the black sand beach next to the military tents and NPCs. You have now reached the fifth island.

How to confirm you reached the right island

You are in the correct place when the beach is made of black sand and active lava flows down the slopes. Military tents and NPCs line the shore, and a scientist in a yellow hazmat suit stands near the camp. This scientist starts the final questline, asking you to catch five volcano-native creatures with the Scientific Lure before handing over the Fish Bucket used to summon the Whale boss.

If you sailed off course and no island appears, you are likely still outside render distance. Recenter the marker and keep driving north until the volcano loads.

Boat upgrades that speed up the trip

Two upgrades make navigation much easier by the time you head for the volcano. The radar upgrade mounts the radar directly onto the boat, so you no longer have to hold the handheld version in your hands to see the marker. A stronger engine cuts the travel time across the longer stretches of open water between the late islands.

UpgradeWhat it does
Boat radar mountFixes the radar on the boat so the marker stays visible without holding the handheld item
Best engineIncreases boat speed, reducing the time it takes to reach the volcano

With the route unlocked and the radar mounted, the run to the Volcano island is a simple straight drive north. Land on the black sand, speak with the hazmat scientist, and you are set up for the game’s final stretch and the Mutated Bowhead Whale fight that clears the way back to the mainland.
