Shinigami progression in VV Ultimatum is built around a linear quest chain that gradually opens the Inner World — the location where Shikai is ultimately earned. The process has distinct phases, and each one has a clear unlock trigger, so knowing the full sequence upfront keeps the grind purposeful.
Quests, Soul Society, and the Soul Pager
Quest NPCs are spread across Soul Society Outskirts, The Marsh, Arctic Plains, and Hueco Mundo. If you're having trouble spotting them, hold C to activate Sense, which highlights all nearby characters. Working through Main Story Quests in these areas builds your level and feeds into every milestone that follows.
After completing a handful of Main Story Quests in Fort Adam and Soul Society Outskirts, the Soul Society zone unlocks. Press U to open the faction portal and travel there, then head to the Hub. Kou, the Missions NPC standing outside, sells a Soul Pager — purchase it to start requesting Missions or join ones already running. Promotion Tasks, also accessible through the Soul Pager, raise your Rank and open harder missions for faster experience gains.

How to get Mission Tickets
Mission Tickets are required to enter any Soul Society Mission. Three consistent sources keep them stocked:
- Finishing Main Story and Daily Quests — the issuing NPC rewards tickets on completion.
- Defeating open-world NPCs — Hollows, Dragonflies, Bats, and similar enemies have a chance to drop them.
- Opening Chests — found while exploring the open world or completing Missions, with a random chance of containing tickets.
Level 25, Meditation, and Spirit Whispers
Grinding quests and missions to Level 25 unlocks the Meditation mechanic. Press L to meditate. The first time you do this at or above Level 25, a green aura emits from your character — visible confirmation that the Shikai acquisition process has started.
After that first aura, Spirit Whispers become the next key mechanic. These short one-liners flash above your HP bar, and each one is a timed window. Press L to meditate the moment a Whisper appears, because doing so earns Shikai EXP. Letting Whispers pass without responding drags the process out unnecessarily.
When your Shikai EXP is sufficient and you meditate during a Whisper, you'll be pulled into the Inner World. If meditating during a Whisper just puts your character to sleep instead of teleporting you, the EXP threshold hasn't been met yet. Head back to quests and missions, then wait for the next Whisper.
Bells Puzzle in the white void
The first time a Whisper meditation successfully teleports you, you'll land in a white void. Follow the blue orbs floating through the space — they lead to white bells. Interacting with each bell triggers either an NPC fight or a riddle. Wrong riddle answers send you back to the main world immediately, but bells you've already solved turn blue and remain saved. You can return and continue from where you left off without redoing completed bells.

The three riddles and their correct answers:
| Riddle | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| I cannot talk, but I always reply when spoken to. What am I? | 2 — An Echo |
| What gets broken without being held? | 1 — A Promise |
| What is always in front of you, but can't be seen? | 1 — The Future |
Once all the bells are solved, you're returned to the main world. Progress is saved automatically.
Clearing the Inner World fog (Level 35)
Meditating again after the Bells Puzzle takes you back to the Inner World, but it will be completely covered in fog on this first return. A main story quest activates at this point, sending you back to the main world with a requirement to reach Level 35. Hit that level, complete the quest, then meditate again — the Inner World will be clear when you arrive.

Fighting the Shikai NPC
Inside the cleared Inner World, search for the Shikai NPC. It has no fixed spawn location, so you'll need to explore until you find it. Interact with it to check your Shikai EXP. If the amount is too low, return to the main world to grind more quests before trying again.
The first encounter is straightforward — defeat the NPC once to complete it. After that, gather more Shikai EXP and challenge it again to trigger the full three-phase boss fight:
Step 1: The boss opens in Base Form, using all of your own skills and passives against you. Expect a fight that mirrors your own moveset closely.
Step 2: Once defeated, the boss revives in Second Form. It retains everything from the first phase and adds new unique moves on top, making this the most varied part of the fight.
Step 3: When the boss's HP drops below three bars in Second Form, it recovers four additional HP bars and switches to a different weapon for the Final Form. Defeat and execute it to end the fight and return to the main world.
Your Shikai Weapon is now unlocked. Hold E during combat to swap your primary weapon for it and activate your Shikai Abilities.
Unlocking Shikai Abilities
The Shikai Weapon arrives without its full ability set active. Meditate again to return to the Inner World and find the Shikai NPC one more time. With enough Shikai EXP, speaking to it triggers a dialogue that sends you back into the white void — this time populated with silhouettes of various Shikai weapons.

Locate the silhouette that matches your Shikai Weapon and interact with it to complete the unlock. An Ability tab will now appear inside your Character, Inventory, and Quest Log menus. Ability Tokens collected through continued play can be spent in that tab to reroll your Shikai Ability whenever you want a different one.
You can play VV: ULTIMATUM on Roblox to work through this progression firsthand. Each stage produces a visible confirmation — the green aura at Level 25, blue saved bells, the fog lifting at Level 35, and finally the Ability tab appearing once Shikai is fully unlocked.
