How to Get the M16A2 in Rust: Crates, Oil Rigs, and Apartments

The burst-fire M16A2 can't be crafted, so here are every loot source and the apartment-raid route.

The burst-fire M16A2 can’t be crafted, so here are every loot source and the apartment-raid route.

The M16A2 is a burst-fire only rifle in Rust that leans on high accuracy and a fast fire rate rather than raw single-shot power. It cannot be crafted or unlocked through the tech tree, so every copy you own has to come from a loot container or from another player. That includes the copy sitting inside someone’s rented apartment room.

Quick answer: You get the M16A2 only as loot. Open Locked (Hackable) Crates or Elite Crates at monuments like Launch Site, Military Tunnel, the oil rigs, and Cargo Ship, or raid an occupied apartment room that shows Medium or High value using a Master Key bought at Bandit Camp for 1,000 Scrap.

M16A2 stats and ammo

The M16A2 fires in three-round bursts and feeds on standard 5.56 Rifle Ammo, the same rounds used by other assault rifles. It stacks to a single item slot and despawns from the ground after one hour if dropped. Knowing the numbers helps you confirm you actually looted an M16A2 and not another rifle.

The receiver carries a “Rifle Batch #13” label, and the iron sights use a rear aperture marked “0-2.” You can attach standard rifle sights such as a Holosight to swap the iron sights for a green circular reticle.

Where to loot the M16A2

The rifle drops from high-tier crates. Locked Crates give it at a fixed rate, and the same crate type appears in a few variants tied to different events and monuments. Each drop is a full, undamaged rifle.

SourceChanceAmount
Locked Crate12.12%×1
Locked Crate – Ghostship12.12%×1
Locked Crate – Oilrig12.12%×1

Locked (Hackable) Crates spawn at the Small and Large Oil Rigs, on Cargo Ship, and from Chinook helicopter drops. Approach the laptop on top, hold the prompt to Begin Hacking, and wait out the 15-minute timer before the crate opens. Elite Crates are the other main route and appear at Launch Site, Military Tunnel, Large Oil Rig, the Small Oil Rig, and on Cargo Ship when it is active. Both crate types are contested, so expect a fight.

Getting an M16A2 from an apartment room

Apartments are safe-zone storage rooms, but they are not vaults. A Master Key lets you break into an occupied room, and rifles like the M16A2 are exactly the kind of loot that pushes a room’s estimated value up. If the apartment computer flags a room as Medium or High value, there is a real chance weapons are inside.

The Master Key is sold at Bandit Camp from the Produce Exchange for a base price of 1,000 Scrap, though demand can push it toward 3,000 Scrap. It restocks every 12 real-life hours and is consumed after a single successful break-in, so one wrong door burns the whole cost.

Buy a Master Key at Bandit Camp from the Produce Exchange. Match your spend to the price, since a 1,000 Scrap key can gamble on Medium rooms while a 3,000 Scrap key should only chase High value.
Rent any apartment room, even the cheapest Basement at 100 Scrap. Renting is what unlocks access to the apartment computer.

Open the apartment computer and read the room list. It shows occupied rooms, room type, storage slots, and estimated value, which is your filter for finding weapons instead of junk.

Pick an occupied room marked Medium or High and walk to its door. Hold interact to start the break-in. You cannot move while it unlocks, so a busy hallway leaves you exposed.
Once temporary access is granted, loot fast and leave. Access is time-limited, so grab weapons, boom, scrap, and HQM before it closes.

Note: The value rating is a signal, not a guarantee. A High value room is the best clue you get, but it can still hold armor or components rather than the rifle you wanted. Upkeep storage generally cannot be looted, so plan around normal storage only.

Recycling the M16A2 for components

If you already have rifles and want parts instead, the M16A2 recycles into useful components. A Radtown Recycler returns more than a Safezone Recycler, so shred spares away from town when you can.

Repairing the M16A2

The M16A2 repairs at a Repair Bench and does not require the blueprint to fix. A full repair from low condition costs up to 14 High Quality Metal, and each repair reduces the weapon’s maximum condition by 20%. That condition loss means a looted rifle only survives a limited number of repairs before it wears out for good.

Because the rifle can’t be crafted, treat every M16A2 as a finite asset. Farm the oil rigs and Cargo Ship for crates, keep a Master Key ready when apartment rooms light up with value, and recycle worn spares into rifle bodies and burst modules instead of repairing them into the ground.
