How to Get Wheat in Solarpunk (Airship Level 2 and Beyond)

Wheat sits behind the Level 2 airship upgrade, so save your first harvest for trades and Bread before feeding chickens.

Wheat sits behind the Level 2 airship upgrade, so save your first harvest for trades and Bread before feeding chickens.

Wheat does not grow on the starter island in Solarpunk, which is why so many players spend their early hours searching for it in the wrong place. It only appears on islands you reach after upgrading your Airship, and it quickly becomes a bottleneck because Tradebot deals, Bread, and Animal Feed all demand it at the same time.

Quick answer: Upgrade your Airship to Level 2 by completing the Tradebot trades that end with 32x Copper, then fly to the three-island cluster northwest and the large single island northeast of the starter island. Harvest the Wheat nodes there to collect both Wheat and Wheat Seeds.

Wheat grows on distant islands, not on the starter one.

Upgrade your Airship to Level 2 first

The Level 1 Airship can only reach two nearby islands, and neither carries Wheat. To expand your travel radius, you need an Airship upgrade component, which the Tradebot hands over after a chain of trades. You collect it at the crafting table on your Airship Dock, where the upgrade option sits at the bottom of the menu next to a boxy orange backpack icon.

The Tradebot you need is inside the shop on the small island just north of the starter island, the one with the sunflowers. Complete each trade in order to unlock the Level 2 Airship Research Upgrade.

TradeRequiredWhere to source it
14x WatermelonLevel 1 island north of the starter island, then regrown from seed
212x CottonStarter island, grown from seed
320x BeeswaxHarvested from Beehives you can craft early
410x WatermelonKeep replanting Watermelon seeds
532x CopperLevel 1 island north of the starter island (unlocks Level 2)

After the Copper trade, return to the Dock and confirm the upgrade so the new range applies. You will know it worked when the white travel circle on your map grows, opening the routes that hold Wheat.

The Tradebot offers the Airship upgrade after a chain of trades.

Where to find Wheat in Solarpunk

Once Level 2 is active, two destinations open up. A cluster of three islands lies to the northwest, and a single large island sits to the northeast. Both carry Wheat nodes, and each node you pick up gives one Wheat plus one Wheat Seed. Plant the seeds in a farming plot at your base to start your own supply.

IslandWheat locations
Northeast (large single island)One on the southern landing area, one beside the small pool, one on the eastern side up the path south of the pool, and one on the raised platform to the southeast
Northwest (three-island cluster)Two side by side on the top-right island, plus one in the middle of the larger island to the left

Tip: While you are out there, grab any Quartz you spot. It processes into Silicon in the Furnace, which you will want for later energy buildings, so a single trip can solve more than one problem.

These spots are enough to start progression, but they will not fill an entire farm. The early harvest is intentionally small.

Unlocking Level 2 opens up other islands you can travel to.

What Wheat is used for

Several systems start asking for Wheat at roughly the same point, which is what turns it into a bottleneck. Knowing where it goes helps you avoid spending it on the wrong thing.

UseWhy it matters
Tradebot tradesA 10x Wheat trade pushes progression forward
Tier 5 ResearchNeeds 1x Wheat at the Research Table, plus 2x Wheat for the Farming & Animal Decorations Pack
BreadRequired for a later Tradebot trade
Animal FeedFeeds chickens so they produce Eggs
Seed productionBecomes sustainable once Seedspack is unlocked

Do not feed chickens too early

The most common mistake is dumping your first Wheat into Animal Feed the moment you tame a chicken. Chickens burn through feed fast, and if their hunger never reaches 10/10, you get no Eggs at all. That turns every grain you spent into a waste.

Spend early Wheat on progression first. Finish the 10x Wheat trade, then prepare for the 10x Bread trade. Only after those are done should you commit Wheat to feeding animals.

How to make Bread with Wheat

Craft Dough at the workbench using 3x Wheat. The Dough recipe unlocks as soon as you obtain your first Wheat.
Place the Dough in a Furnace with fuel to turn it into Bread. Each batch of Dough yields an equal amount of Bread.

Because one Bread costs 3x Wheat, the 10x Bread trade needs at least 30x Wheat in total. With a limited early supply this can take several in-game days, even up to a week, which is another reason not to waste Wheat on feed beforehand.

Place the Dough in a Furnace with fuel to turn it into Bread.

When to use Wheat for Animal Feed

Once the key Wheat and Bread trades are handled, stockpile around 12 to 14 Wheat before feeding a single chicken. That buffer gives you enough room to satisfy the chicken’s hunger fully and actually collect Eggs.

If you have two chickens, stockpile more or temporarily remove one so the available feed can keep a single bird satisfied. The target is 6x Eggs, which the Tradebot accepts for the Level 3 Airship upgrade. That upgrade opens more islands with additional Wheat nodes, though still not enough to fully sustain a growing farm.

Stockpile around 12 to 14 Wheat before feeding a single chicken.

How to sustain Wheat long-term

The permanent fix is the Seedspack, unlocked at tier 6 of the Research Table. It lets you convert harvested produce back into seeds, so you are no longer limited to whatever Wheat Seeds you found while exploring.

Seedspack requirementAmount
Raspberry1
Cotton1
Wheat1
Carrot1
Sunflower1

Carrot and Sunflower both come from islands that open after the Level 3 Airship upgrade, so Seedspack is a mid-game goal rather than an early fix. Once it is active, focus on multiplying Wheat Seeds first. From that point, Wheat stops being a fragile bottleneck and becomes a renewable crop that can keep an entire animal farm fed.
