Flame Breathing is the style tied to Rengoku in Project Slayers 2, and it is gated behind one trainer, one item cost, and a run of six short trials. Everything after that is mastery grinding, which is what actually gates the bigger moves like Blazing Universe and Purgatory.
Quick answer: Reach level 25, bring 10 Demon Horns to Flame Trainer Rengu, then clear his six trials. The last one is a fight against the 600 HP Flame Trainee.
Flame Breathing requirements in Project Slayers 2
Rengu will not open the questline until both conditions are met at the same time. He checks your level first, then takes the horns.
- Level 25 or higher
- 10 Demon Horns in your inventory
- A sword equipped for the training fight at the end
The first Project Slayers used a much heavier gate for the same style — the Flame Trainer there sits in Wop City and asks for level 75, 10,000 Wen and 150 Demon Horns. Do not carry those numbers over to the sequel.

The trainer is out in the Wilderness, past Mistfol Harbor, not inside a village hub. The landmark to aim for is the cliff with a cherry blossom tree at the top, where the Rengu boss (3,000 HP) spawns. You have to climb the rock face to get up there rather than walk around it.

From that cliff, look around the nearby buildings for a two-story house. Flame Trainer Rengu stands on the roof, which is why players often run straight past him at ground level. Interact with him there to see the level and horn check.
How to farm 10 Demon Horns
Demon Horns drop from demon enemies, and the fastest reliable spot is the cave behind the waterfall in Bamboo Grove. The Hoyuzo Subordinate demons that spawn inside drop the horns you need.
All six Flame Breathing training trials
Once the questline is active, a waypoint marks each trial in order. Five of them are minigames and the sixth is a fight. None of them can be skipped or reordered.
| Trial | Where | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Meditation | Butterfly Estate | Timing bar minigame |
| Pushups | Butterfly Estate, blue mat | Prompt-based minigame |
| Boulder Split | Boulder area, ~1,000m away | Split the boulder |
| Target Shooting | Wooden target wall | Click every target |
| Cup Game | Training area | Track the cup 10 times |
| Flame Trainee | Stone platform | Boss fight, 600 HP |
The quest tracker on the side of the screen tells you which trial is live and how far away the marker is, so you can keep fighting normal mobs between objectives without losing your place.

Save the Cup Game for a moment when nothing else is happening on screen. It only ends when you pick correctly 10 times in a row, and a wrong click costs you progress.
Confirming Flame Breathing unlocked
Beating the Flame Trainee on the stone platform is the moment the style is granted. To verify it, open your skill tree — Flame Breathing will now have its own branch and its own mastery track.
The first move, Unknowing Fire, has to be bought with skill points before you can use it. Nodes further down the tree stay greyed out with an “UNLOCK PREVIOUS” prompt until you buy the ones before them, so spend points in order.

Flame Mastery levels for Blazing Universe and Purgatory
Mastery XP comes from using Flame Breathing on tough targets, not from mob farming. Bosses give the biggest chunks, and squadding up keeps the runs short.
- Rengu, the 3,000 HP boss near the cherry blossom cliff
- Water Trainee Sabito, repeatable and quick to kill
- Giyen and Sumari, better with a group
- Goon Raids for bulk mastery XP
Blazing Universe becomes available at Mastery 20. The ultimate, Purgatory, needs Mastery 53 and a Rengu kill — the move drops from him rather than being bought outright, so you may need several kills before it lands. Rengu respawns on a timer, so parking near his spawn is the efficient way to farm both mastery and the drop.
Rengoku appearance and Flame Katana drops
The look is separate from the style. In character customization, the combination that reads closest to Kyojuro Rengoku is Primary Hair 9 and Secondary Hair 9, with Eyes 68 and Mouth 68.

The gear itself comes off Rengu. Both the Flame Katana and the Flame Slayer Uniform are rare drops from his kill rewards, which is why the same boss doubles as your mastery farm and your cosmetic farm.
With the style unlocked and a few mastery levels banked, the same character is ready for the Final Selection exam, where NPCs like Rem hand out short collection tasks before the exam’s boss fights begin.
