How to Use Count Romilly’s Figurine in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone

Dismantling this auction prize hands you a will and a key that opens the "A Dark Legacy" treasure hunt.

Dismantling this auction prize hands you a will and a key that opens the “A Dark Legacy” treasure hunt.

Count Romilly’s figurine looks like a decorative brass eagle you overpaid for, but it exists for one reason. Breaking it apart is the only way to unlock the hidden “A Dark Legacy” treasure hunt in the Hearts of Stone expansion.

Quick answer: Dismantle the figurine at any blacksmith or armorer to obtain Count Romilly’s will along with an ornate key. Reading the will triggers “A Dark Legacy.”

Win the figurine during Open Sesame!

The figurine only appears during the Borsodi brothers’ auction in the “Open Sesame!” quest. It is listed as lot number one, described as a brass statuette from the collection of the infamous Count Romilly, with a rumor that treasure hides inside.

You must win the bidding on the eagle statuette, which typically costs around 300 Crowns. This is the single opportunity to obtain the item. If you skip the auction or lose the bid, you cannot start the treasure hunt tied to it.

Dismantle the figurine at a craftsman

Travel to any blacksmith or armorer who offers a dismantle service. The tier of the craftsman does not matter, since the components are identical regardless of skill level.

Open the craftsman’s wares and press L1/LB to switch to the Dismantle tab. Select Count Romilly’s figurine from the list.
Approve the work. An amateur craftsman may charge as little as 29 Crowns. The figurine is destroyed, and you receive Count Romilly’s will along with an ornate key.
Open your inventory, head to the quest items, and read Count Romilly’s will. The letter names Arnskrone Castle as the resting place of the family treasure, and the quest log updates with “A Dark Legacy” as an active treasure hunt.

Complete “A Dark Legacy” at Arnskrone Castle Ruins

The treasure sits in the Arnskrone Castle Ruins, deep in Deadwight Wood, northeast of Oxenfurt. Fast-travel to the nearest signpost and approach on foot.

If you have not visited before, an ancient leshen and a pack of wolves and wargs guard the grounds. Bring a decdecoction and your best silver blade before you arrive.

Clear the enemies outside, then head into the ruins and look for the descending stairs in the western corner.

A blocked door stops your path forward. Cast the Aard Sign to break it open. Doing so immediately summons three wraiths, so be ready to fight the moment the door gives way.
Move through the underground chamber to the hidden vault. The chest sits through the left door and around a corner. Use Witcher Senses to spot it if it is not obvious.
Open the chest with the ornate key and loot it. Doing so triggers the “Quest Completed: A Dark Legacy” prompt, confirming the treasure hunt is finished.

The reward includes two random diagrams alongside miscellaneous loot such as a Lesser Perun runestone, ruby dust, and amber dust. The exact contents are randomized, so the runestones and dust you receive may differ from another playthrough.

A second treasure hunt, “The Secret Life of Count Romilly,” can be picked up in the same ruins. Both quests involve chests in the cellar, so you can tackle them together in one trip. Keep an eye on which objective is selected, since looting the chest while a different quest is active can occasionally leave “A Dark Legacy” stuck as incomplete. If that happens, reload a save from before opening the chest.
