Valheim has left Early Access with its 1.0 update, adding refreshed crafting, building, and cross-play systems while expanding the Viking survival game to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Xbox players have been able to play it since 2023, and the full launch has sent a lot of people back to one basic question about how to get in without paying up front.

The confusing part is the “cloud-playable” tag on the store listing. That label sits next to Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, which makes it look like the game is included. It is not. The cloud option lets you stream the game across supported devices, but only after you have purchased Valheim on Xbox first.
Note: Xbox cloud gaming now carries monthly play-time limits, and the amount of streaming time depends on your subscription tier. So even after buying the game, cloud access is capped rather than unlimited.
Valheim used to be on Game Pass
The reason so many players expect to find Valheim on the service is that it was there before. The game joined PC Game Pass in September 2022 and then arrived on consoles through the Xbox Game Preview program on March 14, 2023, landing on Xbox Game Pass the same day. Will Valheim come back to Game Pass?
Microsoft has not announced any plan to bring Valheim back to the library. That does not rule out a future return, but nothing is scheduled or confirmed.
