Lumber Tycoon 2: How to Get Your First Axe and Sell Wood

Lumber Tycoon 2 drops you onto a patch of grass with $20 and no instructions. Everything in the game runs on one loop — buy an axe, cut a tree, feed the wood into a conveyor, get paid. The first axe is cheap, the first sale takes about two minutes, and both happen within walking distance of where you spawn.

Quick answer: Buy the Basic Hatchet for $12 from Thom inside Wood R Us, chop an oak tree with left click, then drag the wood into the Wood Dropoff conveyor beside the store.

Only one axe is affordable with your starting cash. The rest exist as upgrade targets, and the numbers below explain why most players skip straight past the middle of the list once money starts coming in.

The Hardened Axe at $550 is the first purchase worth saving for, because it handles every wood type at a reasonable speed. The Plain Axe and Steel Axe are stepping stones you can safely ignore if you are patient enough to grind oak for a little longer with the hatchet.

How to buy the Basic Hatchet from Thom

Launch Lumber Tycoon 2 on Roblox and wait for the Welcome to Lumberland prompt to clear. New accounts sometimes have trouble saving progress, so open the Menu, choose Load, pick Slot 1, and press Reload slot before you spend anything.

Walk across the road into Wood R Us, the shop directly ahead of your spawn point. It is the building marked PREMIUM SELECTION, with a ROBLOX NEED WOOD!!! banner and a “Sell wood” arrow pointing around the side.

Find the boxed Basic Hatchet on the shelves and drag it onto the counter where Thom is standing. Click and drag near the middle of the box — grabbing it by an edge often fails.

Press E at the counter to bring up the purchase prompt, which reads “Buy this Basic Hatchet for $12?”, and confirm with Yes. Trying this with the $90 Plain Axe on $20 of cash simply returns a “Sorry m8” refusal from Thom.

Press E again on the purchased box to unbox the hatchet, then select it from your hotbar to equip it. You will see the axe appear in your character’s hand, which confirms the purchase went through.

Backspace drops an equipped axe, and an axe also drops with a white sparkle effect when you die. Only you and players you whitelist on your land can pick it back up.

Chopping your first oak tree

Axes work by cutting lines, not by dealing damage to a health bar. Every swing carves a mark into the trunk, and the tree only falls once a single cut runs all the way through the cross-section. Swing too early or too late and the chain breaks, forcing a short pause before you can swing again.

Walk to any oak tree around the spawn area. Oak is the cheapest wood in the game but also the easiest to fell with the weakest axe, which makes it the correct starting material.

Aim at the base of the trunk and hold left click. Keep the cut line at the same height so the marks line up into one continuous slice rather than several shallow notches.

Watch for the on-screen prompts. “Nice chop!” appears as you make progress, and “Timber!” fires the moment the cut passes all the way through and the tree topples.

Cutting at a branch joint disconnects everything attached to that branch, so hitting the junction points on the main trunk detaches several limbs in one swing. That is the fastest way to break a large oak into pieces you can actually carry.

Where to sell wood at the Wood Dropoff

Selling happens at the Wood Dropoff, the conveyor chute beside Wood R Us marked by the red circle and the “Sell wood” arrow on the shop wall. The NPC Geek stands next to it. Anything you feed onto the belt is converted to cash instantly and credited to your balance.

Grab the felled tree or a cut log by clicking near its centre and dragging. Hold Shift with WASD to rotate the piece while you carry it, which makes awkward branches far easier to steer.

Push the trunk end into the funnel first. The trunk vanishes as it enters, the attached branches fall loose, and the whole tree clears much faster than feeding it in sideways.

Check your cash counter. A single uncut oak dropped straight onto the belt is worth roughly $149, which is enough to cover a land plot and still leave change.

Raw logs disappear when you leave the server. Planks cut at a sawmill are permanent, so anything you want to keep or build with has to be milled first.

Logs vs planks: why milling wood pays more

The same tree is worth several times more once it has been run through a sawmill. There is a public sawmill behind Wood R Us you can use for free, and a Shabby Sawmill costs $220 to place on your own land.

Frost wood is the clearest example of the gap — $9 as a log against $106 as a plank, roughly a twelvefold jump. Feed logs into the mill one at a time, clear the Blockage warning if a piece jams, and use the Plank Cross Section width and height controls to set the size of the boards coming out the other end.

Buying land and hauling bigger loads

Once you have around $100, head to Yes! — It’s the Land Store and talk to Ruhven to buy the cheapest plot. The plot arrives with a default SOLD sign planted on it, and that sign can be pulled up and sold at the Wood Dropoff for a few hundred dollars of free starting capital.

Owning land lets you place your own sawmill and a vehicle spawner, so wood gets processed where you park instead of being dragged across the map by hand.

A Utility Vehicle costs $400 from Wood R Us and turns each sale into a truckload instead of an armful.
Small trailers attach to the truck and roughly double what you can carry per run.
Stack planks flat in the truck bed before driving so nothing slides off on the road.
Press L to toggle the vehicle headlights when you are hauling at night.

At the Wood Dropoff you still unload by hand, grabbing each plank out of the bed and dropping it onto the conveyor. A full truck of milled oak planks returns around $550, which covers the Hardened Axe outright.

From there the loop repeats at a larger scale — better axe, better sawmill, bigger trailer, more valuable wood. Oak pays for the Hardened Axe, birch and gold pay for the Silver Axe and a Sawmax, and the truck you bought early keeps working the whole way up.
