Mortal Shell 2: How to Get Your First Map in Fainweald

Follow the crow markers from Widow's Overlook Beacon to reach Ruk and claim the Map of Fainweald.

Follow the crow markers from Widow’s Overlook Beacon to reach Ruk and claim the Map of Fainweald.

The open world of Mortal Shell 2 hides itself behind a blanket of fog, and walking through an area does nothing to clear it. To reveal a region on your map, you need to physically collect the map for that area, and the first one you can grab after the prologue is the Map of Fainweald.

Quick answer: From the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, follow the path southeast past the Great Arbiter of Flesh arena, clear the cultists near the tree, use the jump pad to the right of the tree, and interact with the pedestal beside Ruk at the top of the hill to collect the Map of Fainweald.

Find Ruk using the crow markers

Once the prologue is over, the world opens up and several crow markers appear on your map. Each crow points to Ruk, an NPC who hands over the map for the region he is sitting in. The markers are already placed for you, so reaching a map is a matter of traveling to the crow icon and picking up the item resting on the pedestal beside him.

Multiple maps are scattered across the world, but the Widow’s Overlook Beacon is the most convenient starting point for your first one. The route runs southeast from the beacon and passes through a few enemy encounters before it reaches Ruk.

Route from Widow’s Overlook Beacon to the Map of Fainweald

Stand at the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, turn around, and continue down the path leading southeast. Keep moving forward until the terrain opens up ahead of you.

You will pass a large arena on your right where the Great Arbiter of Flesh boss can be triggered. This is a tough fight, and picking up a Shell beforehand makes it far more manageable. For the map run, ignore the arena entirely and keep going straight.
Continue ahead until you meet a group of cultist enemies. Deal with them, then head toward the large tree in the distance. Flying enemies circle the tree and can be left alone, but their projectiles hit hard, so stay mobile if you choose to sprint past.

Look to the right of the tree to find a jump pad. When the LAUNCH prompt appears at the bottom of the screen, press it to shoot up to the top of the hill.

At the top of the hill you will find Ruk sitting on a statue. Interact with the pedestal next to him to collect the Map of Fainweald, which uncovers part of the surrounding region on your map.

What collecting the map unlocks

You will know the pickup worked when the fog lifts from part of Fainweald on your map. Because this is your first map for the region, grabbing it also marks three Corrupt Gates. These are guarded by powerful bosses that sit in front of Beacons, and cleansing those Beacons rewards a large amount of Ova.

From there you can push toward your main objective or chase the remaining crow markers to peel back more of the world one region at a time.

There are 11 map fragments spread across Mortal Shell 2, and each one is tied to a Ruk location marked by a crow. Tracking down every one clears the entire map of fog and unlocks the “Sat Nav” achievement or trophy, so it is worth returning to those crow icons if you want a fully revealed world.
