Mortal Shell 2: How to Unlock Smert Shell

Complete three blood offerings at Prophet's Rest, then inhabit the Unknown Shell to claim Brother Smert.

Complete three blood offerings at Prophet’s Rest, then inhabit the Unknown Shell to claim Brother Smert.

Smert is locked behind a blood offering, not a boss. The ritual sits at Prophet’s Rest in western Fainweald. Finish all three offerings, then inhabit the Unknown Shell in the cave behind the pool to receive Brother Smert.

Quick answer: Start at the Citadel of Penance, take the teleporters through Desolate Peak to Prophet’s Rest, defeat an enemy inside each of the three circular basins until they glow red, then inhabit the Unknown Shell behind the pool.

Blood Offering at Prophet’s Rest

When you enter Prophet’s Rest, the location title appears over a rocky, forested clearing. Three circular basins sit on the ground near Smert’s body. Each basin must receive a blood offering before that corpse will respond.

There are two ways to light a basin. Killing an enemy that is standing inside the circle is the safer one. The basin turns red and you stay inside your current Shell. Interacting with the circle yourself also starts the offering, but it knocks you out of your Shell.

Offering methodWhat happens
Defeat an enemy inside the basinThe circle turns red. You keep your Shell.
Interact with the circle yourselfThe offering starts, and you are forced out of your Shell.

Lure a foe into a basin and kill it there. After the fight you will still see the usual Coin and Gloom pickup. Repeat that on the remaining two circles. The offering is ready only when every basin is glowing red.

Note: If you trigger a basin by touching it, recover your Shell before you start the next one. Staying unshelled through another offering will kill you.

Citadel of Penance Route to Prophet’s Rest

If you are already standing in Prophet’s Rest, skip this run and go straight to the basins. Everyone else should begin at the Citadel of Penance beacon on the far west side of Fainweald. A bag near the Overrun Quarry dungeon in eastern Fainweald can send you to that citadel if you have not reached it yet.

Rest at the Citadel of Penance beacon and head south. Stay on that path until a bridge comes into view.
Drop down near the bridge and use the first teleporter. The hop takes you out of the citadel and toward Desolate Peak.

Move forward, drop down, and use the second teleporter. That exit lands you in Prophet’s Rest, where the three basins are waiting.

Inhabit the Unknown Shell

When every blood offering is glowing red, Smert’s body answers. Enter the cave behind the pool and interact with the Unknown Shell. The prompt is INHABIT UNKNOWN SHELL. A shell memory titled THE CONVERT plays, and Brother Smert is granted as the reward.

You know it worked when that memory finishes and Smert, also listed as Smert the Apostate, appears among the Shells you can inhabit. If the corpse stays dark, at least one basin is still unlit. Return to the circles and finish the missing offering, then try the cave again. Once claimed, the Shell stays unlocked for the rest of the playthrough and can be swapped at the usual rest points.
