Charms are the passive equipment slot in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and there are 15 of them scattered across Kyoto. Only one is handed to you. The rest are rewards for optional side content, which is why players finish the campaign with half a collection and no idea what they walked past.
Quick answer: One charm comes from story progression. The other 14 are rewards for eight Chance Encounters and six Mysteries of Kyoto. Complete all 14 of those side quests before you accept the final mission, “The Clash At Rendaino,” and the set is complete.
All 15 charm locations and what unlocks each one
Every charm is tied to a named quest. Nothing here is hidden in a chest or dropped by a boss, so if a charm is missing, the quest behind it is the thing you need to find.
| Charm | Unlocked by | Quest type |
|---|---|---|
| Charm of the Healer | Story progression | Main story |
| Charm of Zeal | Pale Lights in a Night Sky | Chance Encounter |
| Sadist’s Strength Charm | Clear Space, Clear Mind | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Stamina | The Growling Ghost | Chance Encounter |
| Reaper’s Charm | An Ugly Business | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Dexterity | Noisy Neighbors | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Enticement | The Odd Couples | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Awakening | A Fishy Story | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Oni Power | Restless Spirits | Chance Encounter |
| Charm of Purification | The Blessed Man | Mystery of Kyoto |
| Blazing Charm | Worm-ly Ways | Mystery of Kyoto |
| Oni Strength Charm | Some Unfinished Monkey Business | Mystery of Kyoto |
| Charm of Protection | The Night Parade | Mystery of Kyoto |
| Inner Strength Charm | Something in the Water | Mystery of Kyoto |
| Fencer’s Strength Charm | The Faceless | Mystery of Kyoto |
The Charm of the Healer arrives on its own as the campaign moves forward, and it increases the amount of health restored when you heal. You do not need to hunt it down.

Add to Google Preferences →Buy Oni Vision at the Spirit Mirror first
Three Special Skills make the sweep manageable: Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range. Purchase all three at the Spirit Mirror before you start exploring seriously, and hold off on spending Oni Stones elsewhere until you own them.
Once they are active, hold L2/LT and tap R2/RT repeatedly while moving. Nearby collectibles and quest points light up through walls, which is the difference between finding side quests and jogging past them.
The eight Chance Encounter charms
Kyoto holds 18 Chance Encounters in total, and eight of them pay out a charm. These are the short, self-contained requests you pick up from citizens around the map, so the fastest way to sort the charm-bearing ones from the rest is to open the Map screen and read the reward preview attached to each marker.
Clear Space, Clear Mind hands over the Sadist’s Strength Charm, and The Growling Ghost awards the Charm of Stamina. Both are ordinary encounters with no prerequisite beyond reaching the story point where they appear.

Select a marker on the map and the game lists what finishing it gives you. An Ugly Business shows the Reaper’s Charm in that reward panel, which is a quick way to confirm you have the right encounter before you commit to it.

Use Set Marker on the highlighted encounter so you can navigate straight to it. Noisy Neighbors is the one to tag if you are chasing the Charm of Dexterity.

The remaining four are Pale Lights in a Night Sky for the Charm of Zeal, The Odd Couples for the Charm of Enticement, Restless Spirits for the Charm of Oni Power, and A Fishy Story for the Charm of Awakening.

The six Mystery of Kyoto charms and their prerequisites
There are eight Mysteries of Kyoto in the game and six of them end with a charm. They are longer than Chance Encounters, and two of them will not show up on your map at all until you have cleared another quest first.
| Mystery of Kyoto | Charm | Must complete first |
|---|---|---|
| Some Unfinished Monkey Business | Oni Strength Charm | Worm-ly Ways |
| Something in the Water | Inner Strength Charm | A Wife’s Prayer |
Worm-ly Ways is itself a charm quest, so finishing it nets you the Blazing Charm and opens the path to the Oni Strength Charm. A Wife’s Prayer does not award a charm on its own, but skipping it locks the Inner Strength Charm behind a mystery that never appears.
The other four run without conditions: The Blessed Man for the Charm of Purification, The Night Parade for the Charm of Protection, and The Faceless for the Fencer’s Strength Charm.
Note: If a quest simply is not on the map, the usual cause is story progression. Several side quests only unlock after specific main missions, so push the campaign forward and check again rather than re-sweeping the same district.
Charm upgrade costs at Emma’s Hall
Collecting the charms is only half of the Charmed Life trophy and achievement, which also requires every charm fully upgraded. Enhancement unlocks after you complete “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu.”
Every charm costs the same to level, so the total is fixed and easy to budget for.
| Upgrade | Red Souls | Favor |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 (per charm) | 3,000 | 3,500 |
| Level 3 (per charm) | 6,000 | 6,500 |
| All 15 charms maxed | 135,000 | 150,000 |
You know the job is done when the shrine no longer offers a Make Offering cost for any charm in the list.
Point of no return and New Game Plus carryover
Nothing in the charm set is permanently missable, but free roam ends the moment you accept “The Clash At Rendaino.” The game warns you before that trigger. Keep a manual save at that point, or select Continue from the main menu after the credits, and you are dropped back in just before the finale with your progress intact.
If you are heading into New Game Plus for Carnage difficulty, the split matters.
| Carries into NG+ | Resets in NG+ |
|---|---|
| Charms and charm enhancements | Mysteries of Kyoto |
| Hozuki Pouches and upgrades, Items | Chance Encounters |
| Awakened Oni Abilities, enhanced Skills | Red Souls, Spirit Mirror unlock progress |
| Genma Notes, Lion Dogs | Clothing, Sword and Gauntlet enhancements |
Because the charms themselves stay with you, there is no penalty for finishing the collection late. The side quests behind them reset, though, so a second run means clearing the same Chance Encounters and Mysteries again if you want their other rewards.
The practical approach is to treat charms as a side-content checklist rather than a treasure hunt. Buy the three Oni Vision skills early, take every citizen request you come across, clear Worm-ly Ways and A Wife’s Prayer before you assume anything is missing, and bank Favor as you go so the 150,000 total is not waiting for you at the end.
