The Oni Bow is the ranged tool Musashi needs to progress in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. It fires at enemies from a distance and, just as importantly, triggers mechanisms that block the critical path. You cannot skip it, and you cannot lose it by wandering off, because the game gates the story behind picking it up.
Quick answer: During the main quest “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu,” after the fight with Sasaki Ganryu, keep moving through the cave past the spirit mirror shrine, head straight into the wooden structure, and open the gold chest at the end of the path.
When the Oni Bow becomes available
The pickup sits early, inside the Oni Refuge area that opens up after Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Musashi activates the Oni Glyph, passes through a wall, and lands in the refuge with the objective marker still reading “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu.” From that landing point the route forward is a single corridor of cave, so there is no wrong turn to take before the chest.

How to confirm you picked it up
Two things happen the moment the chest opens. You get the acquisition card naming the Oni Bow, and the quest objective changes to “Use your bow to open the wall.” That prompt is the definitive confirmation, because the game only issues it once the weapon is in your hands.
Aim at the blocked gate ahead and fire. The wall opens and the path continues, which is the practical proof that the bow is equipped and working. On Nintendo Switch 2, aiming can also be handled with motion controls by holding ZR and moving the right Joy-Con 2, an input option Capcom lists for the game.
If the chest is not where you expect
There are only a couple of ways this goes wrong, and neither is permanent. If you have not beaten Sasaki Ganryu yet, you are in the wrong cave section and the chest will not be there. If you passed the spirit mirror shrine and did not enter the wooden structure, you have walked past the turn — go back to the shrine and take the straight line forward.
Note: the bow cannot be permanently missed. The story will not let you leave the Oni Refuge without it, since the sealed wall immediately after the chest only opens to an arrow.
What the Oni Bow does once you have it
Ammunition is unlimited, so there is no resource to manage and no reason to hold back on shots. Beyond combat, the bow doubles as a puzzle tool throughout the refuge and later areas. You use it to shoot cores inside floating rocks to bring them down, to clear archers positioned above you, to drop wooden ramps, and to hit gate blocks so they float upward and open a route.
From here the refuge continues toward the stage and the fight with Daidara — Slavering Glutton, with a spirit mirror save just before it. Keep the bow in mind for anything that looks unreachable; more often than not, the answer in this stretch of the game is a well-aimed arrow rather than a sword swing.
