Mud pits and rock gaps will trap your car in Over the Hill no matter how far you’ve upgraded it. Wheels spin, the chassis catches, and the throttle stops helping. The game gives you a small set of recovery tools, and picking the right one depends on what’s around you when you get stuck.

Quick answer: Aim the Quick Winch at a nearby tree and pull yourself free. If no tree is in reach, place a Portable Winch anchor and press O to pull toward it.

Quick Winch vs. Portable Winch in Over the Hill

Both winches work by pulling your vehicle toward a fixed point. The difference is where that point comes from.

ToolAnchor pointHow you get itReusable
Quick WinchA nearby treeIncluded with your vehicleYes
Portable WinchAn anchor you placeBought from Crazy GuntherNo, single use

Check for trees first. If one is within the cable’s reach, the Quick Winch costs you nothing. Save the Portable Winch for open ground where there’s nothing to hook onto.

Use the Quick Winch on a tree

Every vehicle comes with the Quick Winch, so there’s nothing to buy. Aim at a tree close to your car, attach the cable, and reel yourself toward it. The pull drags the vehicle out of the mud or off whatever rock is pinning it. When the car starts rolling under its own power again, you’re free.

Use the Portable Winch when no tree is nearby

Pick a spot in the direction you want the car to move. Place the Portable Winch anchor there.
Attach your winch cable to the anchor you just placed.
Press O to pull your vehicle toward the anchor. Keep pulling until the wheels find solid ground and the car can drive on its own.

The anchor can’t be picked back up once it’s placed, so each Portable Winch covers one recovery. Choose the placement carefully.

The same tool also works on other cars. In Recovery missions, you can use it to haul stranded vehicles back into motion.

Buy and upgrade winches at Crazy Gunther

Portable Winches are sold by Crazy Gunther. Find his location on the map, go to his shop, and open the Tools menu to buy one. Since you can’t predict when you’ll bog down on open ground, keep at least one in the car at all times.

The same shop lets you upgrade your winch’s range, paid for with Pebbles. A longer cable reaches anchor points that sit farther away, which means more trees become usable with the Quick Winch and fewer situations call for a Portable Winch.

Switch to Low Range before rough terrain

Low Range gives your vehicle an easier time on steep slopes and muddy trails. Shift into it before you hit those sections, not after you’re already sunk. It won’t make you immune to getting stuck, but the car struggles less on the spots most likely to trap it.

Respawn at a discovered cabin as a last resort

Sometimes there’s no tree in range, no Portable Winch in the trunk, and no amount of throttle that helps. In that case, respawn at any cabin you’ve already discovered. You lose your position on the trail, but it ends the standoff immediately and puts you back on the road.
