Hunting for Meaning is a Friendship quest from Sifuu that hinges on a single kill. She wants firsthand material for her book, which means you need to bring down a Proudhorned Sernuk — the rare, blue-tinted deer that blinks across Bahari Bay the moment it notices you.
Quick answer: Equip a bow loaded with Dispel Arrows, find the single Proudhorned Sernuk in Northern Bahari Bay, hit it once to shut off its teleport, finish it with four Dispel Arrow hits (or ten Makeshift), loot the drop bag, then talk to Sifuu in Kilima Valley for 25 Renown and 4 Palium Bars.
Requirements to unlock Hunting for Meaning
The quest will not appear in your log until two conditions are met. Sifuu has to be at Friendship Level 3 (Burly Buddy), and her earlier Villager quest, An Adventurous Memoir, has to be finished. Once both are true, Sifuu sends a letter and the objective “Hunt a Proudhorned Sernuk” is added to your quest tracker.

Add to Google Preferences →Why Dispel Arrows matter for the Proudhorned Sernuk
A Proudhorned Sernuk has 10 health and a teleport. Startle it — by getting too close, missing a shot near it, or missing with a Smoke Bomb — and it blinks three times in quick succession before settling down again, usually travelling in one direction and covering an enormous stretch of ground. If it is alerted and you never land the kill, it vanishes from the map entirely.
Dispel Arrows switch that ability off for a short window. They also do 3 damage a hit, the same as Fine Arrows, so a Sernuk that has been dispelled dies in four total hits. The arrow recipe unlocks at Hunting Level 9 and costs 2,000 Gold from Hassian’s Hunting Guild Store.
| Arrow | Damage | Hits to kill Proudhorned Sernuk |
|---|---|---|
| Makeshift Arrow | 1 | 10 |
| Standard / Slowdown Arrow | 2 | 5 |
| Fine / Dispel Arrow | 3 | 4 |
Tip: one Dispel Arrow is enough to strip the teleport. After that hit lands you can swap to a cheaper arrow type and keep firing, which saves the expensive ammunition for the next rare spawn.
Where the Proudhorned Sernuk spawns
Proudhorned Sernuk only exist in Bahari Bay, and they favour the northern half of the zone — The Outskirts is a reliable patch of ground to sweep. Only one is active on the map at a time, so if another player has already dropped it, you are waiting for a respawn.
They also move constantly. Unlike an Azure Chapaa, which loiters in a small area, a Proudhorned Sernuk walks slowly in one direction and grazes on the way, and it can travel the length of the map over time. Scan forest edges and riverbanks and look for the blue coloring that separates it from Common and Elder Sernuk.
A Hunting Horn pins magical creatures to your UI, which turns a long search into a direct walk.
How to hunt the Proudhorned Sernuk and finish the quest

Rewards and how to confirm the quest completed
The objective ticks over to “Return to Sifuu” as soon as you loot the Proudhorned Sernuk. If that line does not update, the kill did not register for you — most often because someone else landed the killing blow and you never picked up your own drop bag.
| Reward | When |
|---|---|
| 4 Palium Bar | On completion |
| 25 Renown | On completion |
| 30 Friendship Points with Sifuu | On completion |
| Sifuu’s Key | Post-quest, arrives in mail |
Sifuu’s Key opens her room, where her manuscript, A Life of Grand Adventure, can be read. Finishing the hunt also chains into her next quest, Memoir Blues, and counts toward the Sernuk Hunter accomplishment.
Common reasons the hunt fails
- The Sernuk despawned. An alerted Proudhorned Sernuk that escapes is gone for good, and only one spawns at a time, so you will need to wait for another.
- No arrows in reserve. Arrows are consumed per shot and every non-Makeshift type needs metal bars, so restock at a workbench before the trip.
- You damaged it but never looted. Multiple players can hit the same animal and each gets their own bag, but the drop has to be collected for the quest to advance.
- Wrong region. Common and Elder Sernuk in Kilima Valley or Southern Bahari Bay do not count — only the Proudhorned variant does.
If Dispel Arrows are still out of reach at Hunting Level 9, the hunt is doable without them. It simply means landing ten Makeshift or five Standard hits while the Sernuk blinks across the landscape, and a Slowdown Arrow between teleports makes that chase far more manageable.
