Palworld 1.0: How to Get the Ancient Pal Manuscript

Pal expeditions hand out guaranteed manuscripts every run, with higher-tier destinations paying out the most per trip.

Pal expeditions hand out guaranteed manuscripts every run, with higher-tier destinations paying out the most per trip.

The Ancient Pal Manuscript is a rare crafting and research material written on Pal hide, and in Palworld 1.0 it comes almost entirely from Pal expeditions. Every expedition destination drops it at a 100% rate, so a running Pal Expedition Station is the closest thing to a reliable supply. You will need stacks of it to advance research at the lab and to craft the higher-tier Training Manuals.

Quick answer: Build a Pal Expedition Station (unlocks at level 15), send a squad on any expedition, and collect the manuscripts from the station once the timer completes. Higher-risk destinations pay more per run, up to 25–30 on Hard routes.

What the Ancient Pal Manuscript is used for

The manuscript is a Rank 8 rare material that Pals bring back from expeditions. Its main job is advancing research, and it also feeds two experience items. It has no combat use and cannot be crafted from scratch, which is why farming sources matter.

On the crafting side, 100 manuscripts plus 10 Fiber make a Training Manual (L), while 500 manuscripts with High Quality Cloth and Leather make a Training Manual (XL). Research projects consume it in smaller amounts, from 5 up to 70 per unlock for things like Handiwork Speed and Base Pal Enhancement tiers.

Farm manuscripts through Pal expeditions

Expeditions are the primary source in 1.0. Each destination drops the manuscript at a 100% rate, so every completed run returns a guaranteed batch. The amount scales with the destination’s tier, and Hard routes cap out at 25–30 per trip. Once your research reductions are in place, output per run climbs further.

Set up the Pal Expedition Station

Reach level 15 and open the Technology menu. Unlock the Pal Expedition Station, which costs 20 Wood, 20 Stone, and 5 Paldium Fragment to build.

Place the station at your base and interact with the glowing circle in front of it to open its menu. The default destination is Verdant Hollow at Low risk.
Use Change Destination to pick a route. Every listed destination can return the Ancient Pal Manuscript, so choose based on the risk and firepower you can safely meet.
Check the destination info for the required Pal type and target firepower. A high-risk route like Celestial Sakura Cavern asks for Water-type Pals and around 375,000 firepower over a one-hour run.

Assign Pals until your total firepower clears the target. Meeting or beating it pushes the reward percentage above 100%, which increases the haul. Press Start and the Pals run into the cave.
Wait out the timer. Standard runs take 30 to 60 minutes. When the circle shows a green Completed icon, open the station and collect the manuscripts from the rewards screen.

Note: To unlock a region’s expedition, defeat the tower boss tied to that area first. The Dark Cave of Feybreak stays locked until you beat the Hard-mode tower boss at the Rayne Syndicate Tower.

Fish for manuscripts as a backup

Fishing spots can also return manuscripts, though the drop rates are lower and the counts are smaller than expeditions. This works as a supplement while exploring, not a main farm. The Grassland fishing spot has the highest single-catch chance at roughly 46.5%.

Fishing spot Amount Chance
Grassland 1 46.5%
Forest 1–2 6.8%
Desert 2–3 7.6%
Volcano 2–4 10.6%
Snow 2–5 7.2%
Sakurajima Treasure 2–7 7.2%
Feybreak Treasure 3–8 10.3%
Sky Island Treasure 5–11 11.9%
World Tree Treasure 8–16 9.0%

What changed in Palworld 1.0

In 1.0, the Ancient Pal Manuscript can no longer be bought from the bounty merchant. That removes the fastest shortcut earlier players relied on and pushes expeditions to the front as the steady supply line. It cannot be purchased with gold from any merchant, so there is no vendor route to fall back on.

Tip: Condensing your expedition Pals raises their level and firepower, which lets you send fewer, stronger Pals on high-tier routes and comfortably clear the reward threshold. Lucky Pals can now arrive fully condensed, which speeds up building a dedicated expedition team.

How to confirm the manuscripts arrived

You know a run worked when the ground circle at the station switches to a green Completed marker. Interact with the station to open the reward inventory, where the Ancient Pal Manuscript appears under Pal Materials with the description noting it may be found by Pals during expeditions. Take the stack into your storage, and keep it in a secure box since it is rare.

If a research project fails to start, the cause is almost always a missing ingredient rather than a bug, since projects need other materials such as circuit boards, gunpowder, and Ancient Civilization Parts alongside the manuscripts. Canceling a project before it finishes returns the spent materials, so you can reassign them without losing anything. Keep at least one expedition cycling in the background and you will build a steady reserve for the lab.
