Abyss is one of the reworked league mechanics in Path of Exile 3.29. The core loop is the same as before, but the opening interaction changed. Pits are now static instead of chasing a crack across the whole map, which removes the old backtracking and speeds up how you reach the reward. If you play Path of Exile 2, the flow will feel familiar. If you don’t, the change is easy to pick up.
Quick answer: Follow the green cracks on your minimap to a Pit, kill the marked monsters to close every crack feeding that Pit, then defeat the stronger Abyssal enemies that spawn to seal it. A reward chest may drop, but it is not guaranteed.

How the reworked Abyss mechanic works in 3.29
You first meet Abyss during Act 6. In maps, look for a green circle on your minimap. Approaching it starts the encounter, and several cracks appear as green dots leading toward a larger dot, which is the Pit.
There is no timer. The green dots on the minimap mark the monsters tied to each crack. Kill the monsters near a crack and its dots switch off. Once every crack feeding a Pit is cleared, the Pit erupts and spawns stronger Abyssal enemies. Defeat all of them to seal the Pit and claim a reward chest.
The chest is not guaranteed. Sometimes a sealed Pit gives nothing, which is normal and not a bug. Because the reward is a chance roll, the mechanic still behaves like a jackpot system built around big hits rather than a steady currency stream.
Tip: Close Pits one at a time. Reward scaling reads “for each prior pit closed,” so sealing Pits in sequence gives more than triggering them all at once.

Add to Google Preferences →Abyssal Depths and the Lich bosses
In a zone at level 78 or above, a Pit has a small chance to open into the Abyssal Depths instead of ending in a chest. Inside, you fight one of the two Abyssal Lich bosses.
- Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well
- Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless
Beating these Liches matters beyond their own loot. Each one is a step toward the new pinnacle fight. Abyss is also the sole source of Abyss Jewels and Stygian Vises in 3.29, so the deeper content is where higher-tier versions of those items come from.
Reaching Zorath, Vile Assembled (the new Pinnacle boss)
The new Abyss pinnacle boss is Zorath, Vile Assembled. To open the fight you need four different Zorath’s Eyes, each dropped by a specific boss. Once you have them, use a Zorath’s Eye in your map device to reach the Lightless Hollow, where the encounter takes place.
| Zorath’s Eye | Dropped by |
|---|---|
| Eye of Malevolence | Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well |
| Eye of Authority | Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless |
| Eye of Inevitable | Kurgal, the Blackblooded |
| Eye of Endless | Catarina, Master of Undeath |
Each Lich has a chance to drop its dedicated Eye, so you may need several runs before all four line up.
Abyss Jewels and exclusive drops
Abyss Jewels are the heart of the mechanic’s economy because Abyss is now the only place they come from. There are four types, each tied to a different build style.
| Jewel type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Ghastly Eye | Minion builds |
| Hypnotic Eye | Spellcasters and energy shield stackers |
| Murderous Eye | Attack builds |
| Searching Eye | Hybrid stats such as onslaught on kill and accuracy |
Stygian Vises also drop only from Abyss. Item level 83 to 84 bases hold their value, while low item level versions are effectively vendor material, so filter for the higher rolls. A corrupted 6-mod Abyss Jewel is the top prize, since it can roll combinations that ordinary crafting cannot produce.
Atlas and Scarab setup for Abyss farming
To farm Abyss efficiently, you want Pits spawning often and in numbers. Build your Atlas Tree around the Abyss nodes that increase Pit spawns and boost how much each closed Pit rewards, then support it with Searing Exarch and Beyond for extra density.

Two specialization nodes shape the rewards. The Skittering Darkness node converts Abyssal Troves into Abyss Skitterlocks, turning your chests toward Scarabs. The Inspired Darkness passive lets you pick a faction, and monsters loyal to Amanamu are a solid default, though Kurgal or Ulaman are worth trying too. The rest of the tree should push monster density and the number of Pits closed.
For Scarabs, this rotation keeps Pits and monster counts high:
| Scarab | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Abyss Scarab | 2 |
| Abyss Scarab of Multitudes | 2 |
| Abyss Scarab of Descending | 1 |
An open map layout makes the crack-following faster, since you can see incoming danger and chain between Pits without wasting time. Avoid map mods that cut recovery, such as “cannot regenerate,” “no leech,” and “reduced recovery rate,” because Abyss packs hit hard when density is stacked.
Playstyle notes for juiced Abyss maps
Survivability matters more than raw clear speed once you juice Abyss. Enemies in heavily loaded maps hit extremely hard, especially rare monsters that carry stacked modifiers, so a durable build handles the density better than a glass cannon.
Keep sealing Pits in order to respect the “for each prior pit closed” scaling, move quickly through the green cracks to trigger the tougher spawns, and treat every level 78+ zone as a possible route into the Abyssal Depths. That combination is what turns a routine map into a Lich run, an Eye drop, and eventually a path to Zorath, Vile Assembled.
