Practical Basketball: How to Self Lob on PC and Controller

The exact inputs for pulling off a self alley-oop off the backboard on keyboard and gamepad.

The exact inputs for pulling off a self alley-oop off the backboard on keyboard and gamepad.

The self lob, listed in-game as the self alley-oop, throws the ball off the backboard and lets your own player catch it for a finish at the rim. It runs on a single input on PC and a two-button combination on a controller, and it lands cleanest when you already have a clear lane to the basket.

Quick answer: Drive toward the hoop, then press F on PC, or hold LB/L1 and press RS/R3 at the same time on a controller.

Self lob inputs by platform

The move maps to one key on keyboard and a stick-plus-bumper combination on gamepad. Both platforms need forward momentum toward the rim for the animation to trigger.

Perform a self lob on PC

Start driving toward the hoop with the ball in hand. You need momentum heading at the rim, not a standstill.
Press the F key as you approach the backboard. Your player throws the ball off the glass and moves to finish the catch.

The same F key is also used for the double clutch layup or dunk after timing a finish, so keep it reserved for these gather and lob actions during a possession.

Perform a self lob on controller

Move toward the basket with the ball, building forward speed the same way you would on PC.
Hold LB on Xbox or L1 on PlayStation, then click the right stick (RS/R3) at the same moment. Both inputs must register together for the lob to fire.

If nothing happens, you almost always pressed the two inputs slightly apart. Practice tapping the stick click while the bumper is already held down until the timing feels automatic.

How to know it worked

A successful self lob plays a distinct animation. Your player tosses the ball toward the backboard, then catches it in the air and finishes at the rim. If the ball simply drops or you take a normal layup, the move did not register.

Why a self lob fails

  • You were standing still or moving away from the rim instead of driving toward it.
  • On controller, the bumper and right stick click were not pressed at the same time.
  • The paint was crowded, so a defender recovered before the catch. Self lobs finish best in open lanes.

Because Practical Basketball is still in its stress-test phase, inputs can shift between patches, so it is worth rehearsing the timing in an empty gym before taking the move into a park run. You can jump into the current build on its Roblox game page and drill the lob until the catch lands cleanly every time.
