Saros Grapple Unlock: Where it Drops in Shattered Descent

The grapple in Saros is a story-gated traversal ability that lets Arjun zip across gaps to those purple anchor points scattered around every biome. You cannot miss it, and you cannot get it early. It arrives at a fixed beat near the start of the third biome, Shattered Descent.

🎯
Quick answer: Clear the second biome (Ancient Depths) by defeating Bastion, return to the Passage for the cutscene, fast travel back to Shattered Descent via the World Dial, and interact with the terminal directly ahead to unlock the grapple.

What the grapple does

Grapple points appear as floating purple machines with a blue glow. Before the ability is unlocked, they cannot be shot, interacted with, or prompted. After unlocking, walking into range surfaces a Triangle prompt that pulls Arjun across the gap. The animation also grants brief invulnerability mid-zip, which makes grapple points useful as escape routes during heavy combat.

Once the ability is active, prior biomes such as Shattered Rise and Ancient Depths reveal their grapple points too, opening side rooms, higher ledges, and shortcuts that were previously unreachable.

Unlock requirements in order

StageWhat you need to do
Biome 1Defeat Prophet to leave Shattered Rise.
Biome 2Reach Ancient Depths, activate both terminals on either side of the central vault, then defeat Bastion.
TransitionWatch the post-Bastion cutscene and proceed toward Shattered Descent.
Biome 3 setupFollow the main objective until you are sent back to the Passage to repair an item from camp; a cutscene plays.
UnlockUse the World Dial to fast travel back to Shattered Descent and interact with the terminal directly ahead.

The Bastion fight is worth flagging. The boss leans on yellow ring projectiles that punish anyone standing still, and the arena is built around Jump Network Pads for repositioning. The shotgun that drops in Ancient Depths is not ideal here since you want to maintain distance.

How to use grapple points

Step 1: Move toward a purple grapple point until you are within usable range. The blue glow is the visual cue, and the prompt only appears when you are actually close enough to connect.

Step 2: Press Triangle on the DualSense when the prompt appears. Arjun will zip to the anchor automatically, and you remain invulnerable for the duration of the pull.

Step 3: If no prompt shows up, step closer. There is no aiming or charging involved, so the absence of a prompt always means range, not timing.

How to confirm the unlock worked

You will know the ability is live when the terminal interaction in Shattered Descent ends and the next grapple point you walk up to displays a Triangle prompt. From that moment, the chasm between the Shattered Descent entry area and the elevator down to the main zone becomes crossable, which is the gate the game uses to require the ability before progress continues.

Common reasons it has not unlocked yet

  • Bastion is not defeated. The grapple cannot trigger before the second biome boss is down.
  • The Passage cutscene has not played. Returning to camp to repair the brought-back item is the trigger that sets up the unlock objective.
  • You walked back manually instead of fast traveling. The intended path uses the World Dial to return to Shattered Descent, where the terminal sits directly on the route.
  • You skipped the terminal interaction. The ability is granted at a specific console, not as an automatic reward on biome entry.

Beyond reaching new ledges, grapple points double as combat tools. Keeping a mental map of nearby anchors during dense fights gives you a reliable, invulnerable exit, which matters more as later biomes layer on projectile pressure.
