During the In the Heart of the Iron Forest mission in Stalker 2: Cost of Hope, the doors to the generator room inside the Power Substation stay locked until you retrieve a specific key. The key is close by, but reaching it means leaving the interior and climbing along the outside of the building through a wrecked server room and an open office window.

Quick answer: The generator room key is on the table inside the office you reach by crouch-walking across the exterior ledge from the server room. From the locked generator door, backtrack to the start of the hallway, take the open door on the left into the server room, cross it, then exit right through the window to reach the office.

Get inside the Power Substation

The search for the key begins the moment you reach the Power Substation and find the generator room sealed. You need to enter from the roof, drop into the interior, and confirm the locked door before the objective points you toward the key.

Head to the objective marker at the Power Substation and use the ladder on the side of the building to climb onto the rooftop.
Cross the roof while avoiding the fire anomalies. Enter the small stairwell on the far side and take the ladder down into the building.
Go down the stairs and turn right into the dark hallway. At the end you will reach the locked generator room door, and the objective updates to find the key.

Find the generator room key

The key is not behind the locked door. It sits in an office you can only reach by looping back and climbing along the outside of the building. Follow the route below from the locked generator door.

Turn around and run back to the start of the hallway. On the left you will see an open door leading into the building’s server room.
Enter and cross the room past the destroyed server equipment, stepping over the debris on the floor. Pass through the open doorway on the far side.
Turn right and walk out onto the small metal slope toward the window. Crouch-walk along the exterior of the building until you reach an open window.
Vault through the window into the office. The generator room key is on top of the table inside.

Unlock the generator room and continue

Once the key is in your inventory, you do not need to retrace the exterior ledge. A door right next to the office table connects back to the generator room area.

Open the door beside the table, then head through the white doors and turn right to reach the generator room itself. Drop down from the left side and clear out the rat mutants that swarm the space. Cross to the opposite side and flip the red switch to start the generator, which restores power and advances the mission.

You will know it worked when the locked door opens and the quest lets you proceed to explore the Testing Workshop with Zulu and Mavka. If the generator door still reads as locked, you have not picked up the key from the office table yet, so return through the server room and climb back across to grab it before trying the door again.
