Mounts arrived in Steal an Egg with Update 8 on October 10, 2026, and they let you ride your own pets across the biomes instead of running everywhere on foot. You cannot ride a pet the moment you hatch it, though. Each pet has to be converted first, and the only thing that does that is an item called a Star.

Quick answer: Obtain a Star through the nightly Star Drop event or from the Star Handler NPC. Equip it, approach the pet you want to ride, then use the Star on that pet. It will turn into a mount.

How to get a Star in Steal an Egg

A Star is the single requirement for making any mount. There are two ways to pick one up, and they behave very differently.

Star Drop event (free)

At night, the Star Drop has a small chance to trigger roughly once every five minutes. When it does, Stars appear at different spots around the map. Each eligible player is assigned an individual Star to locate and return to base. You won’t need to race other players for one; your Star is guaranteed when the event begins.

Eligibility is the catch: you need to have joined the server before that in-game day began. Switching servers to find an event already underway will not qualify you for its Star. Choose a server and remain there for complete day-night cycles.

Watch the sky at night. The Stars physically drop into the world, so you need to spot yours and return it to your base before you can use it.

Star Handler NPC (Robux)

If you would rather not wait for the event, the Star Handler NPC stands near the spawn area and sells Stars directly. The weekly cap is five Stars per week, with the stock resetting on Saturday. One reported price is 1,399 Robux for five, and the shop also offers smaller one and three Star bundles. The current Robux cost is always shown at the stall, so check that display before you confirm a purchase.

How to turn a pet into a mount

Once a Star is in your inventory, the conversion takes only a few actions. Feeding the Star is what transforms the pet, and riding comes right after.

Obtain a Star through the Star Drop event or by buying one from the Star Handler NPC. You need it in your possession before anything else works.
Open your inventory and equip the Star so it sits in your item bar ready to use.
Walk up to the specific pet you want to convert. The transformation applies only to that one pet, not your whole collection.
Interact with the Star while targeting the pet, then accept the confirmation. The pet transforms into a mount and the Star is consumed.
In the equipped-pets panel, locate the pet you transformed and press its Ride button. You can explore the biomes while riding on its back; when you want to get off, use the dismount control.

The change is permanent, and there is no documented way to turn a mount back into a normal pet. Choose a pet you actually plan to keep, because the Star is gone the moment you confirm.

Mount rules worth knowing before you spend a Star

  • One Star makes exactly one mount, and it is used up on activation.
  • To ride a second pet, you need a second Star.
  • The conversion cannot be reversed in the current version.
  • Putting a mounted pet in your pen still lets it earn money, so the conversion does not reduce your income.

Because a transformed pet keeps generating money from your pen, the best candidate is one you already use for income and intend to keep long term. Rarity alone does not grant a hidden speed boost, so pick for the pet you genuinely want to ride and keep around.

How to confirm it worked

You know the conversion succeeded when the chosen pet shows a Ride option in your equipped-pets menu, sitting above the usual Unequip control. If that option is missing, make sure the pet is in your own equipped lineup and that you actually accepted the confirmation prompt rather than just holding the Star near it. Feeding the Star is the step that unlocks riding, not simply standing next to the animal with the item in hand.
