Stripping Terraria of its own equipment sounds like a joke premise until you watch someone try to clear Hardmode with it. The rule is simple and brutal: nothing native to the game counts, only gear that arrived through official collaborations with other titles. By the time that restriction reaches the mechanical bosses, the entire build is held together by Old One’s Army rewards, Tavernkeep purchases, and a handful of Dead Cells imports.
Quick answer: Only crossover items are legal, so the Twins and Skeletron Prime attempts rest on an Unreal Phantom Phoenix, Squire armor bought with Defender Medals, and Old One’s Army sentries.
The rule: only official crossover items are legal
Every weapon, armor piece, accessory, and mount in the run has to originate from one of Terraria’s crossovers with other games, which in practice means Dungeon Defenders 2, Don’t Starve, and Dead Cells content. Standard progression gear is off the table even when it drops directly into your hands. The Wall of Flesh treasure bag, for example, hands over a Pwnhammer and a class emblem, and neither can be equipped or used under the rules.
The playthrough runs on version v1.4.5.6, on a world named “drumn 2 boss fixed,” with a character called Steve. That version matters because the crossover catalog is what defines the entire item pool.

Add to Google Preferences →The crossover kit carried into the mechanical bosses
Nothing in this loadout was handed over quickly. Each piece came from a repeatable event, a shop, or a drop chase, and several required multiple attempts before they appeared.
| Item | Source | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Unreal Phantom Phoenix | Old One’s Army | Primary ranged damage |
| Barrel Launcher (Deadly) | Flying Dutchman, Pirate Invasion | Bouncing explosive damage |
| Explosive Trap Rod | Old One’s Army sentry line | Stationary trap damage |
| Squire’s Great Helm | Tavernkeep, 15 Defender Medals | Defense and health regeneration |
| Squire’s Plating | Tavernkeep, 15 Defender Medals | Defense and sentry bonuses |
| Huntress armor set | Tavernkeep, Defender Medals | 36 defense, trap bonuses |
| Gradient yoyo and Yoyo Bag | Skeleton Merchant | Melee option |
| Trusty Chillet | Little Kinship Peach upgrade | Mount mobility |
The Barrel Launcher was the longest grind of the lot. It only drops from the Flying Dutchman, and four separate Pirate Invasions were needed before it finally appeared, after which the Goblin Tinkerer reforged it to Deadly.
The melee slot came from a much stranger errand. The Skeleton Merchant spawns near the Shimmer pool in the Aether, and boxing him in on a prepared platform makes his stock reachable on demand. That shop supplied both the Gradient yoyo and the Yoyo Glove, which in turn enabled the Yoyo Bag.

Tier 2 Old One’s Army: Defender Medals and the Phantom Phoenix
The Old One’s Army is the engine of the whole build. Clearing the Tier 2 version pays out Defender Medals, which are the only currency the Tavernkeep accepts, and it also drops the Phantom Phoenix bow that carries the boss attempts.

Why Squire armor is worth the medals
Medals go to the Squire set for two specific reasons. The set bonus raises sentry count and sentry limits, which turns the Explosive Trap Rod into a real damage source rather than a novelty. The Squire’s Great Helm also grants direct health regeneration, a rare defensive stat in a run with no access to standard Hardmode armor. Both the helm and the plating cost 15 Defender Medals each.
Crafting The Beheaded’s set at a Crimson Altar
The Dead Cells vanity set is cosmetic, but it is still a crossover item, and assembling it means a full material run. The three pieces are The Beheaded’s Head, The Beheaded’s Cuirass, and The Beheaded’s Trousers, all crafted at a Crimson Altar.
- Ancient Cloth, farmed from Ghouls in the Underground Desert
- Tattered Cloth
- Souls of Night
- A Shadow Candle, which needs Crimtane Ore
The cloth run happens in the Hallowed section of the Underground Desert, where Ghouls drop Ancient Cloth alongside ordinary desert loot such as the Lamia Tail. It is also a dangerous stop. Venom from a desert scorpion was enough to end one trip there.

Crimtane Ore for the Shadow Candle comes from the Eye of Cthulhu. A Suspicious Looking Eye is crafted at the Crimson Altar and used to summon the boss, and the ore drops once it goes down. Souls of Night come from underground and Underworld farming, which is also where the earlier Little Kinship Peach upgrades for the Chillet and Digtoise mounts were sourced.

Vertebrae collected in the Crimson feed straight into the altar crafting, so clear those enemies on the way rather than making a separate trip.
How the Twins and Skeletron Prime attempts ended
With the bow reforged and the Squire pieces equipped, both fights were summoned back to back in the same arena. Retinazer and Spazmatism were first, and the attempt ended when Retinazer’s second-phase lasers finished the player off. Skeletron Prime followed immediately and lasted even less time, with its limbs closing out the session.
The failure pattern is consistent across both: not a damage shortfall, but mobility. Crossover-only gear leaves the build short on movement options, and both bosses accelerate hard once their second phases begin. The Destroyer earlier resisted a different approach entirely, with a sealed cactus box in the sky meant to bounce explosive barrels. It killed the player instantly on the first summon when the head spawned inside the structure, and again on a second attempt when the worm clipped through the walls.
None of the three mechanical bosses have fallen yet under these rules. The gear ceiling is close to maxed for this stage, which means the next step is arena design and movement rather than another reforge.
