The Black Lens is an early game crafting material in Terraria that you cannot make yourself. It only enters your inventory as a rare drop from two enemies, both of which appear after dark, so farming it comes down to killing eyeballs on repeat until the roll goes your way.
Quick answer: Wait until night, then kill Demon Eyes or Wandering Eyes. Each has a 1% chance to drop a Black Lens, and it appears directly in your inventory when it drops.
Black Lens drop sources and rates
Only two enemies drop the Black Lens, and both share the same 1% chance. There is no recipe, no shrine, and no purchase option, so the drop table below is the entire method.

The rate is low, so expect a long stretch of kills before one appears. There is no way to raise the odds through crafting, so the only lever you control is how many eyes you can kill per night.
Where and when to farm the Black Lens
Both target enemies only spawn at night. If you try during the day, neither will appear, so change the time to dusk or night before you start. Wandering Eyes in particular flee once the sun comes up, so they are strictly a nighttime target.
You will know it worked when a Black Lens item appears in your inventory after a kill. Because Demon Eyes also drop other items, expect to collect plenty of Lens (a 33% drop) and a guaranteed Demon Eye Banner along the way.
What the Black Lens is used for
The Black Lens feeds exactly two recipes. Sunglasses need two Black Lens each, while the Optic Staff uses the material as part of its hardmode recipe. Once you have enough, stand next to a crafting station so the recipe becomes available.
