Terraria: How to Get the Mushroom Pylon

The exact selling conditions and placement rules that let you buy and teleport with the Glowing Mushroom biome pylon.

The exact selling conditions and placement rules that let you buy and teleport with the Glowing Mushroom biome pylon.

The Mushroom Pylon is a teleport anchor tied to the Glowing Mushroom biome. Like most pylons, you do not craft it. You buy it from a town NPC, and it only appears in that vendor’s stock when a short list of conditions is met.

Quick answer: Stand inside a Glowing Mushroom biome, keep a town NPC there happy enough that their prices drop 15% or more (a sale modifier of 90% or higher), place at least one other NPC nearby, and the Mushroom Pylon will show up in that vendor’s shop for 10 Gold.

Conditions for the Mushroom Pylon to appear in the shop

Every pylon except the Universal Pylon is sold by ordinary vendor NPCs. The Traveling Merchant and the Skeleton Merchant never stock them. The Mushroom Pylon has one detail that trips people up: what appears in a vendor’s shop depends on the biome you are physically standing in, not the biome the NPC lives in. To see the Mushroom Pylon, you have to be inside a Glowing Mushroom biome when you open the shop.

On top of that, the vendor needs to be content with where they live. A pylon only shows up once that NPC is happy enough to discount their goods by at least 15%, which lines up with a sale modifier of 90% or higher.

Raise NPC happiness so the pylon unlocks

Happiness is driven by who an NPC lives near and how crowded their area is. Get these factors right and the discount climbs high enough to open up pylon sales.

  • Place the NPC in a biome they like.
  • Keep an NPC they like within 25 tiles.
  • Allow no more than two other NPCs within 25 tiles.
  • Allow no more than three other NPCs between 25 and 120 tiles.

Note: Because shop stock follows your position, you do not have to house the vendor inside the Glowing Mushroom biome permanently. Keep them happy wherever they live best, then bring them (or visit them) while you are standing in a Glowing Mushroom area to see and buy the Mushroom Pylon.

Buy the Mushroom Pylon

Set up a happy vendor NPC with another NPC placed nearby so both the happiness and companion conditions are satisfied.
Travel into a Glowing Mushroom biome and stand inside it. Confirm you are not in a Corruption or Crimson biome, since those block pylon sales entirely.
Open the vendor’s shop. The Mushroom Pylon should now be listed for 10 Gold. Purchase it, then place it inside the biome.

You know it worked when the pylon appears in the shop menu and, once placed, becomes a usable teleport point on your map.

Use the Mushroom Pylon to teleport

Placing the pylon is not enough on its own. Teleporting has its own set of rules that are separate from the vendor’s happiness.

  • Two or more living, housed NPCs must be inside a rectangle 169 tiles wide and 124 tiles high, centered on the pylon. The Old Man and town pets count as housed NPCs.
  • The pylon keeps working even after those NPCs wander out of the area.
  • It stops working if an NPC is not close to their house.
  • The Mushroom Pylon only functions inside a Glowing Mushroom biome.
  • A lone pylon does nothing. You need at least two pylons to form a network, and you jump between them through the map menu.

Why the Mushroom Pylon is missing or greyed out

If the pylon is not showing or you cannot teleport, one of these specific conditions is usually the cause.

ProblemReason
Pylon not in shopYou are not standing in a Glowing Mushroom biome, or the vendor’s discount is below 15%
No pylon while shoppingNo other NPC is near the vendor
Shop has no pylons at allYou are inside a Corruption or Crimson biome
Cannot teleportFewer than two housed NPCs are within the pylon’s 169×124 tile zone, or an NPC is away from their house
Teleport option missingOnly one pylon exists; a network needs two or more

Once you have a happy vendor, a companion NPC, and a Glowing Mushroom biome under your feet, the Mushroom Pylon is a cheap 10 Gold purchase. Pair it with a second pylon somewhere else on the map and you have a fast route in and out of one of Terraria’s harder-to-reach biomes.
