Ursul the Undefeated is the earliest reliable seller of Swordmastery Manuals in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and the only way to reach his stock is through the quest Ambrus’s Prisoners: Lucky Crossing. Manuals gate your skill tree, so a full bar of unspent Skill Points still leaves perks locked until you own the right book. Ursul fixes that, but he will not trade until you beat him in a duel.
Quick answer: Kill the guards escorting the Lucky Crossing prisoner transport near the Svartrau Bridge shrine, talk to the prisoners until Ursul offers sword training, then travel to his camp on the northeastern edge of the Svartrau Outskirts forest and pick “Can you teach me about swordfighting?” to trigger the duel.
Lucky Crossing quest requirements and rewards
Lucky Crossing is one of two prisoner transport quests tied to Ambrus, the boyar collecting blood tithe in the northern reaches of Vallis Sangora. It costs 3 TIME ticks and pays out once you have spoken to Ursul at his camp.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Region | Svartrau Outskirts / Southern Swampside road |
| Time cost | 3 TIME |
| Rewards | 250 XP, 1x Skill Point |
| Unlock | Ursul as a Swordmastery Manual vendor |
| Side effect | Raises Infamy with Ambrus on the Court screen |
Note: The 250 XP and Skill Point land after the conversation at Ursul’s camp, win or lose. The duel is what opens the shop, not what pays the quest reward.

Add to Google Preferences →Where to find the Lucky Crossing prisoner transport
Both Ambrus prisoner escorts patrol the same road, the one running from Svartrau City’s northeastern gate toward the Military Camp west of the Stoneward Post shrine. Lucky Crossing is the southern of the two, generally near the Svartrau Bridge shrine, while Fate’s Mercy sits further north past the fortified camp. Escorts move, so treat these as search areas rather than fixed pins and follow the road until the transport appears.

Talking to the prisoners: The one dialogue option to avoid
With the guards dead, the prisoners talk to you automatically. If it is night, the option to give in to the hunger appears. Do not take it. Feeding on the people you just freed ends the exchange before Ursul makes his offer, and the training path closes with it.
Every other reply is safe. One of the freed prisoners, Ursul Varna, questions whether you actually know how to use a sword, and the conversation ends with him gruffly inviting you to his camp. That is the trigger. The objective changes to Meet Up with Ursul and a marker appears on the map.

Ursul’s camp location and the duel
Ursul’s camp sits in the woods along the northeastern edge of the Svartrau Outskirts forest, northeast of where the ambush took place. Track the quest from the journal and follow the marker. Shapeshift (Vampirism) or Mercurial Fervor (Witchcraft) cuts the travel time considerably.

How to confirm the quest completed
Two things confirm it worked. Lucky Crossing moves to the completed section of your journal with 250 XP and a Skill Point applied, and Ursul’s trade option becomes available when you talk to him again. If the trade prompt is missing, you have not won the duel yet.
The other common reason players never reach this point is picking the hunger option during the night-time conversation at the ambush site. If that happened, Ursul never extends the camp invitation and the Meet Up with Ursul objective never appears.
Ursul’s Swordmastery Manual stock and prices
Ursul deals almost entirely in Swordmastery Manuals, weighted heavily toward blocking, parrying, and counterattacking. Stock quantities vary between playthroughs, and he also carries a small selection of accessories such as amulets alongside the books.
| Manual | Effect | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Stinging Blade | Increases Weapon Damage | 273 |
| Perfect Riposte | Attack in the Critical Direction after a Perfect Block for Critical Damage | 281 |
| Perfect Block | Perfect Block restores more Stamina and Activation Charge | 285 |
| Omniblock | Omniblock costs less Stamina | 293 |
| Fate’s Favour | Chance for Weapon Critical Hit | 287 |
| Counterattack | Attack after a Perfect Block deals more damage | 549 |
| Precision | More damage with Directional Attacks when directions don’t repeat | 563 |
| Dirty Trick | Stuns and damages a target, making them vulnerable to Active Abilities | 1,049 |
| Walking Fortress | Perfect Block restores a portion of Activation Charge | 1,070 |
Sharp Eye, Renewed Focus, and Adrenaline Rush manuals show up in his inventory in some runs, as do amulets including the Hex Master’s Amulet and Sunlight’s Boon. If a specific book is missing, three other Swordmastery teachers exist elsewhere in the valley, so nothing here is permanently locked behind Ursul alone.
Tip: If you are building around Perfect Block, buy Perfect Block and Perfect Riposte together. They cost under 600 combined and both feed the same defensive loop that Counterattack and Walking Fortress later scale up.
The wider payoff is that freeing Ambrus’s prisoners chips away at his hold on the valley while handing you a merchant who bypasses the randomness of finding manuals as world loot. Its sister quest, Fate’s Mercy, runs on the same road further north and leads to a set of master bracers from the Smith’s Apprentice in Svartrau City, if you want to clear both escorts in one trip.
