The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Pick Up Your Sword in Withering Away

During Withering Away, the early Laslea Glen quest that follows Coen’s nightmare in All Good Things, the objective “Pick up your sword” appears right after the breakfast scene with Pieter and Esme. The weapon is not handed to you, and it is not in the chest you already looted in Coen’s room. It is sitting in a separate room on the far side of the hut, and the objective will not clear until the sword is equipped rather than simply carried.

Quick answer: Leave the dining room, walk down the hallway to the back corner room, press F on the Training Sword leaning against the wall, then open the inventory with I and equip it. The objective changes to “Obtain medicinal herbs from Anca.”

You regain control standing in the dining area after the cutscene where Pieter tries to feed Esme. The front door of the hut is unlocked at this point, but there is no reason to step outside yet. The sword is on the opposite side of the dining room, past the table and stove.

From the dining room, take the hallway that leads away from the table and continue into the small room at the back corner. The Training Sword is propped upright against the wooden wall beside a low table holding a lit candle. It is easy to walk past because the room is dim and the sword blends into the timber behind it.

Loot prompts appear on several containers along the way. The chest inside the house holds a Parasol Mushroom, a Clay Cup and Fruit Juice, which is worth grabbing while you are already here.

How to pick up and equip the sword

Walk out of the dining and kitchen area where the family was seated. Head into the hallway that runs toward the rear of the hut.

Enter the back corner room and face the wall next to the candle. The prompt “Pick up Training Sword” appears when you are close enough.

Press F to take the sword. A message appears stating that the weapon needs to be equipped in the inventory, so the objective is not finished yet.

Press I to open the inventory, select the Level 1 Training Sword and equip it to your weapon slot.

Close the inventory and draw the weapon to check it is actually in Coen’s hands. Press C to leave the combat stance again before you head outside.

How to confirm the objective completed

Two things confirm it worked. The on-screen objective switches from “Pick up your sword” to “Obtain medicinal herbs from Anca • 1 / 2”, and the equipped sword appears on Coen when you enter the combat stance.

If the objective is still asking for the sword, the usual cause is that the weapon is sitting in the inventory unequipped. Picking it up alone does not advance the step. The other common miss is searching the wrong room, since Coen’s bedroom chest holds his clothes, the Recipe for Minor Mending Ointment and Excerpts from Fabulae, but no weapon.

Note: Withering Away is time-sensitive, and getting the herbs from Anca advances the clock by one time segment. The sword step itself costs no time, so there is no penalty for looting the hut properly before you leave through the front door.

With the sword equipped, the quest points you southwest toward Anca’s Hut in Laslea Glen. Coen keeps this weapon for the sparring session against Pieter in Like Father, Like Son, so it is the blade you will be blocking and countering with for the rest of the prologue.
