The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Use Skill Points

Skill Points can only be spent at Shrines, and most upgrades also cost time, Manuals, or Corruption.

Skill Points can only be spent at Shrines, and most upgrades also cost time, Manuals, or Corruption.

Coen earns a Skill Point every time he levels up in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and the game tells you as much with the message “You Levelled up and gained a Skill Point. Select Perks to spend it.” What it does not do is let you spend that point on the spot. Progression is locked to Shrines, so an unspent point sits in your pocket until you physically reach one.

Quick answer: Open the map, travel to any Shrine, interact with it (press F on PC), select Perks, then highlight the Perk or Ability you want and hold the confirm button to learn it.

How to spend Skill Points at a Shrine

A green arrow appears beside your health bar whenever you have a Skill Point waiting. That is your cue to head for the nearest Shrine.

Open the map and look for a Shrine marker, shown as a small church icon. Hovering over one, such as Laslea Centre, brings up a tooltip confirming it “Allows you to spend Skill Points, fast-forward time or travel to any other previously discovered fast travel point.”

Track the Shrine so it stays marked on your compass while you travel. If it is already tracked, the tooltip switches to an untrack option instead.

Travel to the marker on foot, or fast travel if you have already unlocked another Shrine. Reaching a new one for the first time pops a “Shrine Discovered” banner, which also adds it to your fast travel network.

Stand next to the Shrine and take the “Use the Shrine” prompt. The Shrine menu opens with four options: Perks, Fast Travel, Storage and Wait.
Choose Perks. The entry shows a number in brackets, such as “Perks (2)”, which is how many unspent Skill Points you are carrying.

Pick a tree, highlight the node you want, and hold the confirm button to learn it. Nodes such as Endless Effort, Stinging Blade, Omniblock, Charge and Sustained Focus all sit in the Swordmastery tree.

How to confirm the point was spent

A learned node is labelled “LEARNED” in the tree, and the Perks counter in the Shrine menu drops by the amount you spent. Once every point is gone, the green arrow next to the health bar disappears.

Note: if the in-game clock jumps forward after you confirm, that is expected. Most Perk and Ability levels charge time on top of the Skill Point.

What each upgrade costs besides Skill Points

Skill Points are only part of the price. Each node lists its full cost in the description panel, using icons to show what else it wants from you.

Skill PointsSun/moonEvery Perk and Ability level

Costs also climb as you push a node higher. A Perk’s first rank is cheap, and each rank after that asks for more points and, usually, more time.

Why a Perk or Ability stays greyed out

Extra Skill Points will not open a locked node. There are only a few reasons one refuses to unlock.

  • You are not at a Shrine. The Perks screen is only reachable through the Shrine menu.
  • You have not read the Manual. Swordmastery and Witchcraft tiers marked with a book icon stay locked until you find or buy the Manual and read it from the Manuals & Recipes tab in your inventory. Reading it only makes the tier purchasable; it does not grant the node.
  • Your Corruption is too low. Vampirism nodes need a specific Corruption level, which rises when you feed with Voracious Bite, finish certain quests, or drink Phials of Blood. A “New Vampiric Powers Available” notification tells you when a new tier has opened.
  • You fed on the wrong source. Some Vampirism Abilities sit behind the separate Vrakhir blood track rather than ordinary Corruption.
  • You already took an Ultimate. Each tree ends in three Ultimate Perks costing 35 Skill Points, and you can only ever learn one across the whole build.

Where your points can go: the three trees

Points are not pooled into one shared tree. The Perks screen splits into Swordmastery, Witchcraft and Vampirism, and each of those is further divided into passive Perks on one side and Abilities on the other. Because two of the trees only work in one of Coen’s forms, where you spend matters as much as what you buy.

SwordmasteryDay and night, both formsManuals
WitchcraftHuman form, daytime onlyManuals
VampirismVampire form, nighttime onlyCorruption level

Perks are passive stat changes that apply the moment they are learned, covering things like maximum stamina, health, carry weight and the number of Ability slots you get. Abilities are the moves themselves, and a handful of them run passively.

Learned Abilities still need a Quick Slot

Buying an Ability does not put it in your hands. Open the Active Abilities tab in the menu and place it into a Quick Slot, or it will do nothing in combat, including the ones described as passive.

There are two separate Quick Slot sets, one for day and one for night, with four Active Abilities each. A few Abilities, such as Voracious Bite, Shapeshift, Death from Above and Compel Soul, do not take up a common slot at all.

Because learning most nodes moves the clock forward, and Coen is racing a countdown, it is worth batching your spending. Bank a few points, grab any Manuals you pass, feed regularly to raise Corruption, then unlock several things in one Shrine visit rather than detouring after every level up.
